Ninth Ranked Flyers Defeat Lindenwood For Fifth Straight Win

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' ninth ranked women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to five with a 3-1 win over Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. With the win the Flyers improve to 21-3, 7-2 GLVC while the Lions fall to 10-11, 1-8 GLVC.

Lewis used a 9-2 run in the first set to break an early tie to take control on its way to a 25-15 win. The Flyers hit .300 in the stanza and were led by Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian), Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) with five kills apiece.

The second frame saw 15 ties and one lead change. The set was tied at 22 after Venema and Gisela Bode (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie) teamed up to block Hannah Borchelt. Lindenwood evened the match scoring three of the last four points to win the set 25-23.

The Flyers built an early six-point lead in the third stanza but the Lions fought back thanks to 10-4 run to square the set at 16. Lewis closed the set on a 9-2 run to win 25-18 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Flyers trailed early in set four before taking control with an 11-3 run to build a 12-6 lead. Lindenwood cut Lewis' lead to 22-19 on a kill from Maider Sancho but the Flyers were able to close out the match scoring three of the final four points.

Venema led three Lewis players in double figures with a career-high 19 kills. Wilhelm added 15 kills while Preuss finished with 12 kills. Preuss also had 12 digs in the match to reach the 1,000 dig plateau for her career. Mikah Freppon (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) and Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) had 26 and 24 assists respectively. Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) had 19 digs.

The Flyers finished the match with a hitting percentage of .308 (63 kills/15 errors/156 total attacks) and held the Lions to a .227 attack percentage (50 kills/15 errors/154 total attacks).

Lewis hits the road for the first of four next Friday (Nov. 1) traveling to Evansville, Ind., to take on Southern Indiana at 7 p.m.
