ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The sixth ranked Lewis women's volleyball team extended its season-high winning streak to eight matches with a straight set win at Maryville on Friday evening. The Flyers improve to 14-1, 3-0 GLVC while the Saints fall to 4-11, 0-3 GLVC.
Lewis used an 8-2 run early in the match to overcome an early deficit on its way to a 25-15 set win. The Flyers led by as many as 11 points in the stanza.
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) had five kills in the opening frame.
The middle set featured nine ties and three lead changes. It was tied at 19 after a kill from Elizabeth Eardly but Lewis scored six of the final eight points to win the stanza 25-21.
Mikah Freppon (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic),
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs),
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and
Farah Taki (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) had two kills apiece in the frame.
The final set was even at six when Lewis began to pull away thanks to a 9-5 run to grab a 15-11 lead after a kill from Wilhelm. Maryville wouldn't get closer than three points the rest of the way as the Flyers won 25-18 to complete the sweep. Wilhelm recorded six of her nine kills in the final set while
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) each added four kills.
Lewis' offense recorded 42 kills while hitting .250 for the match while its defense held the Saints to a .112 attack percentage.
Venema led the Flyers with 10 kills while Wilhelm added nine and Schlechte finished with seven. Hailey Sobieralski had 23 assists and
Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) finished with 12 digs.
Lewis concludes its brief two match roadtrip traveling to Rolla, Mo., on Saturday afternoon to take on Missouri S&T at 3 p.m.
