WILBERFORCE, Ohio – Lewis' women's basketball snapped a two-game skid with a 73-56 win at Central State on Saturday evening in Wilberforce, Ohio. The Flyers get back to .500 at 3-3 while the Marauders fall to 2-4.
Lewis led the entire game as the game started with a two free throws by
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston). The lead grew to eight points near the midway point of the opening quarter on a three-pointer by
Madison Mallory (Geneva, Ill./Geneva). CSU cut the deficit to seven on a free throw but the Flyers scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 13-point lead into the quarter break.
Lewis dominated the second quarter shooting 60 percent from the field and was a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and at the free throw line as it outscored the Marauders 18-13. Six different Flyers scored in the quarter led by Hinders with five points.
Lewis shot 44 percent (12-for-27) from the floor in the opening half, was 6-of-14 from three and shot 67 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded Central State 24-to-18. Hinders led the way with seven points while
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and
Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) had six points each.
The Flyers extended its lead to as many as 28 points less than six minutes into the third quarter thanks to a 16-6 run. Gardner and
Carly Graverson (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) had four points apiece in the run. The Marauders outscored Lewis 9-6 over the final four minutes of the quarter to cut the lead to 25 points heading into the final quarter.
Central State opened the fourth quarter on a 16-5 run to cut the Flyer lead to 63-49 with 5:45 to play. That would be the closest it got though as Lewis outscored them 10-7 over the final 5:33 for the final margin.
The Flyers had nine players score in the contest led by Gardner with 14 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Hart added 12 while Graverson and
Reilly Olmstead (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) added 11 points apiece.
Lewis shot 50 percent (27-for-54) from the floor for the contest. It was 10-of-23 from three and 9-for-12 at the foul line. It outrebounded the Marauders 45-to-32 and recorded 22 assists. The Flyer bench outscored the Marauders 35-to-8.
Central State shot under 30 percent (21-for-71) from the field in the contest, was 5-of-20 from three and 9-for-17 at the foul line. Takyra Gilbert led all scorers with 19 points while Brooke Spaulding finished with 12 points.
Lewis concludes its five-game roadtrip on Sunday (Dec. 1) traveling to Big Rapids, Mich., to take on Ferris State at 12 p.m. (CST).
