EAST PEORIA, Ill. – Lewis' 13th ranked women's volleyball team dropped a top 25 match to No. 22 Missouri-St. Louis 3-1 in the semifinal round of the GLVC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the EastSide Centre on Saturday afternoon in East Peoria, Ill. The Flyers fall to 27-5 while the Tritons improve to 29-3.
Lewis trailed 12-10 in the opening set before seizing control with a 9-3 run to take a 19-15 lead after a kill by
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs). UMSL answered with a 6-3 run of its own to cut the Flyer lead to 22-21 after an attack error by
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg). However, Lewis scored the final three points of the set to win the opener 25-21.
The Flyers fell behind early in set two and were never able to recover. They got as close as two points in the set before the Tritons pulled away with a 7-1 run to take a 15-7 lead. Lewis tried to comeback late cutting a 10-point deficit to five at 21-16 but UMSL closed out the set scoring four of the final five points to win 25-17.
The Flyers were up 13-9 in set three but the Tritons used an 8-2 run to grab a two-point advantage. Lewis scored three straight points to regain the lead at 18-17 on a block from
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian). That would be its final lead of the set as UMSL scored five of the next six points to take a 22-19 lead. The Flyers fought back to get within 23-22 on a kill from
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) but the Tritons got to set point first as Charlotte Richards knocked home a kill. The Flyers fought off the first set point when
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and
Tori Foster (Munster, Ind./Munster) teamed up to block Richards. After an UMSL timeout, Richards ended the set with a kill to give the Tritons a 25-23 set win.
The fourth set was even at 10 when UMSL took control with a 10-2 run. Lewis wouldn't get closer than seven points the rest of the set as the Tritons would go onto win 25-15.
The Flyers were held to a season low hitting percentage of .123 (46 kills-26 errors-163 total attacks). Wilhelm led Lewis with 11 kills while Venema added 10 kills and seven total blocks. Van Loo finished with nine kills.
Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) had 20 assists and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) had 16 digs.
UMSL finished the match with an attack percentage of .205 (56k-21e-171ta). Kylie Rudsinski finished with a match-high 19 kills while Kaileen Herman had 39 assists and Megan Woll had 25 digs.
Lewis will find out if it'll host the Midwest Regional during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday (Nov. 25). The show begins at 6:30 p.m.
