FINDLAY, Ohio – Lewis' men's basketball team picked up its second straight win with an 85-77 win at Findlay's Croy Gymnasium on Monday evening in Findlay, Ohio. The Flyers improve to 2-3 on the season while the Oilers drop to 1-4.
Both teams shot the ball extremely well in the first half as Lewis shot 59 percent (16-for-27) from the field while the Oilers were 16-of-33 (49 percent) from the floor The Flyers knocked down 10 three's in the first 20 minutes and Findlay hit eight treys. The difference in the half was at the foul line as the Oilers hit all five of their attempts while Lewis missed both of theirs. The Oilers went into the locker room with a 45-42 lead at the intermission.
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) led all scorers with 17 points in the first half while
Anthony D'Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) added 11. Pischke was 6-for-7 from the floor and hit five of six attempts from beyond the arc.
Ethan Linder and Joey Edmonds led Findlay with 11 points each.
The Flyers trailed 52-50 with less than 14 minutes to play in the contest when they seized control with an 11-2 over a three minute span near the midway point of the second half. D'Avanzo started the run with an old fashioned three-point play and then
Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) and
Artese Stapleton (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) hit back-to-back three's to put Lewis up by seven.
The Oilers briefly cut it to five but Stapleton answered with his second bucket in the run to push the lead back to seven.
Lewis stetched its lead to 66-58 with 8:19 left on another three from Bell. Findlay cut the lead to two with less than seven minutes to go but the Flyers wouldn't relinquish the lead down the stretch.
Lewis still led by two with 4:18 remaining when it put the game away with a 12-2 run as Bell had five points in the run while D'Avanzo added four and Stapleton chipped in with three.
The Flyers recorded season-highs in field goals made (32) and three-point field goals made (15). They finished the game shooting 56 percent (32-for-57) from the field, hit 15-of-25 (60 percent) from beyond the arc and outrebounded the Oilers 32-to-28.
D'Avanzo finished with a career-high 24 points to lead four Lewis players in double figures. Bell added a career-high 21 points while Pischke had 18 and Stapleton finished with 12 points. D'Avanzo and Stapleton had seven rebounds each and Pischke dished out eight assists.
Linder led four Findlay players in double figures with 17 points. Edmonds and Nathan Bruns had 14 points each while Anthony Masterlasco finished with 13 points.
The Flyers host Illinois Springfield in the GLVC opener for both teams next Tuesday (Dec. 3) at 7:30 p.m.
