BOLIVAR, Mo. – Lewis University's 12th ranked women's volleyball team defeated Southwest Baptist in straight sets on Friday evening at the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar, Mo. The Flyers improve to 23-4, 9-3 GLVC while the Bearcats fall to 4-24, 0-12 GLVC.
Lewis never trailed in the opening set as it scored the first seven points of the match. SBU cut the deficit to five before the Flyers put the set away with a 4-1 run to build an eight point lead. That lead grew to as many as 10 with Lewis taking the opener 25-15. The Flyers hit .242 (13 kills/5 errors/33 total attacks) in the stanza.
Lewis dominated the second frame hitting .500 and didn't commit an error and held the Bearcats to a negative .111 hitting percentage. The Flyers closed the set on a 17-2 run to take it 25-7.
Tori Foster (Munster, Ind./Munster) and
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) each had three kills in the set while
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and
Ratkoslava Karac (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) added two kills apiece.
Lewis trailed early in set three before taking control with a 15-4 run turning a two-point deficit into a nine point advantage. The Bearcats wouldn't get closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Flyers won 25-12.
Lewis had a season-high hitting percentage of .382 (40/6/89) and recorded 13 aces which is tied for third most in a game since 2005. Van Loo led the Flyers with nine kills while Wilhelm and
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) added six kills each.
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) tied a school record with eight aces in the contest.
Mikah Freppon (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) added 19 assists and
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West) finished with 12 digs.
Lewis concludes its road trip on Saturday as it takes on Drury at 3 p.m. at the O'Reilly Family Events Center in Springfield, Mo.
