EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Lewis' women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 10 straight with a 72-57 win at Southern Indiana on Thursday at the Physical Activities Center in Evansville, Ind. The Flyers, ranked 11th in this week's D2SIDA Media Poll and 15th in the WBCA Coaches Poll, improve to 23-2 overall and 14-1 in the GLVC while the Screaming Eagles drop to 17-8, 10-5 GLVC.
Lewis, ranked second in the first NCAA Midwest Regional Rankings, shot only 38.2 percent (26-for-68) from the field in the contest but outrebounded USI, ranked seventh in the regional rankings, 49-to-38 and had a 38-to-26 advantage in points in the paint.
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) led all scorers with 22 points and also had 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double, 10th of the season and 34th of her career. She was joined in double figures by
Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) with 20 points while
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) dropped in 14 points.
The Flyers trailed by as many as five points in the opening quarter but scored the final 10 points of the frame to lead 17-12 heading into quarter number two.
Lewis dominated the second quarter shooting 53 percent (8-for-15) from the floor including a pair of three's while holding the Screaming Eagles to just 4-of-18 shooting (22 percent). The Flyers outscored USI 18-8 in the stanza to take a 35-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Both teams struggled to score from the field in the third quarter as they each shot 31 percent (4-for-13) but Lewis hit the only three of the quarter and was 6-of-10 at the foul line while the Screaming Eagles were 5-of-7 at the charity stripe. The Flyers outscored USI 15-13 to extend its lead to 17 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Lewis extended its lead to as many as 21 points with less than eight minutes to play when
Gabby Green (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) converted an old fashioned three-point play. The Screaming Eagles never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way as the Flyers secured the victory on a jumper by
Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) with 0:31 remaining.
Lewis' defense held USI to 36.2 percent shooting (21-for-58) from the field in the contest. Imani Guy led the Screaming Eagles with 18 points while Ashley Johnson finished with 10 points.
The Flyers continue their roadtrip on Saturday heading to Louisville, Ky., to take on Bellarmine at 12 p.m. (CT).
