Lewis Softball Drops Two On Saturday

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Lewis' softball team dropped two games at the Lewis Dome Invitational on Saturday. The Flyers, 1-3, fell to Findlay 5-4 in the first game of the day and then lost to Wayne State 8-0 in five innings in their second game.

Game 1 – Findlay 5 Lewis 4
Lewis led jumped out to an early lead thanks to a two-out rally in the home half of the first. Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) started the rally with a walk and came around to score on Sara Serena's (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) double to left center.

The Flyers added to their lead with two more in the fourth. With two on and one out, Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) singled to left center to score Allie Piatt, running for Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate), to make it 2-0 and then Maddy Beck (Racine, Wis./Case) singled to right to bring home Kavalauskas.

Lewis made it 4-0 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. The Flyers had a chance for more but couldn't get a two-out hit.

The Oilers (3-3) scored twice in the sixth to cut the Lewis lead in half. Madelyn Turner led off the inning with a walk and went to third on a double off the bat of Devyn Zuro. Turner scored on a sacrifice fly by Salwa Al-Hajabed and Zuro scored on Sadie Gearhart's double to right center.

Findlay added three more in the seventh. Back-to-back singles from Caroline Turner and Allison Brunner put the tying runs on base. Serena struck out Gloria Corona and Amanda DelMonte but Zuro blooped a single down the right field line allowing Turner to score. The throw home got away from Beck which allowed Brunner to cross the plate with the tying run. Al-Hajabed won a seven-pitch at-bat lining a double to right center to score Zuro with the go-ahead run.

Lewis put the tying run on base in its half of the seventh but a strikeout looking ended the game.

The Flyers outhit the Oilers 8-7 in the contest with Brennan recording three hits while Serena and Kavalauskas added two hits each. Serena suffered the loss in the circle allowing five runs on seven hits. She struck out five and walked four in the contest to fall to 0-1.

Game 2 – Wayne State 8 Lewis 0 Five Innings
The Warriors scored a run in the third, six in the fourth and one in the fifth for the victory. There first run came with two outs in the third. Hannah McClounie started the rally with a double down the left field line and scored on an error.

Lewis had a chance to tie the game in its half of the third. Kavalauskas led off the inning with a triple but was left stranded there as the Flyers couldn't get the tying hit.
Wayne State sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth scoring six runs on five hits. Rainey Psenicka had the big hit in the inning with a two-run single down the right field line.

The Warriors added another run in the fifth on a two-out single off the bat of Alexis Abruzzo scoring Ashley Messina.

The Flyers were held to four hits in the contest with Kavalauskas, Weber, Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) and Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) recording a hit each. Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) fell to 0-2 allowing eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Lewis concludes play in the Dome Invite on Sunday. It takes on Purdue Northwest at 9 a.m. and Winona State at 11 a.m.
