QUINCY, Ill. – Donovan Oliver's (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) two free throws with four seconds left lifted Lewis' men's basketball team to a 69-67 win at Quincy on Thursday evening. The free throws gave the Flyers, 22-4 overall and 14-3 in the GLVC, their only lead of the second half. Quincy's Ryan Briscoe had a chance to win the game at the buzzer but his 30-footer rimmed out.
The win gives Lewis a share of the GLVC regular season title and it can clinch the outright title with a win at Truman State on Saturday or with a Bellarmine loss at Illinois Springfield.
The Flyers trailed by as many as eight points in the first 20 minutes but closed the half on a 12-6 run to cut the Hawk, 9-18, 3-14 GLVC, to lead to 29-27 at the break.
Quincy extended its halftime lead to six scoring the first four points of the second before Lewis tied it at 35 on a layup by
Kendale McCullum (Elgin, Ill./Elgin Larkin). The Hawks again pushed their lead out to six but the Flyers continued to battle despite a tough night shooting and were able to the game at 53 on a three-pointer by Oliver with less than eight minutes to play.
Quincy surged back ahead with a 9-4 run over the next 2:37 behind six points from Jah-Kobe Womack. Lewis countered scoring six of the next seven points to tie the game at 63 on a three-pointer by
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) with 3:05 remaining.
Womack answered on the other end to put the Hawks ahead 67-65 but it was short lived as
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) slammed down an alley-oop from McCullum on a 2-on-1 fastbreak to even things at 65.
On the ensuing possession, Aziz Fadika was fouled and hit two free throws to put Quincy ahead 67-65 with 1:41 remaining.
Anthony D'Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) answered on the other end hitting a 15-foot jumper from the left baseline to tie it back up at 67 with 1:25 left.
Briscoe tried to give the Hawks the lead back but was called for an offensive foul with less than a minute to play. The officials went to the monitor to review the play but the call on the floor stood.
Oliver had a chance to give Lewis its first lead since early in the game and appeared to have a wide open layup but Fadika knocked the ball loose to give the ball back to Quincy with 0:41. Fadika then had a chance to give the Hawks the lead back but missed a contested layup with 0:26 left as Blaylock came away with the rebound.
Playing for the final shot, the Flyers found Oliver who was cutting to the basket and was fouled from behind on his layup attempt by Demetrious Houston and he proceeded to knock down the two free throws.
After a Quincy timeout, Briscore raced up a floor and his three-point attempt from the volleyball attack line went in and out at the buzzer.
McCullum finished with a game-high 26 points, 18 of those coming in the second half, to lead Lewis in scoring. He was joined in double figures by Pischke with 14 while Blaylock added 11.
The Flyers finished the game shooting 43 percent (25-for-58) from the field, were 10-of-22 from three and shot 82 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Hawks 37-to-26.
