Flyers Earn Split With 6-0 Win over Ferris State Monday

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Lewis University softball team split its games Monday (March 11), topping Ferris State 6-0 and falling to Winona State 7-3. The Flyers move to 3-3 on their Florida trip and have a 5-9 mark overall.

The Flyers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) belted a two-run homer to left field. The score would remain the same until the top of the sixth with Winona State would score five runs to take the lead. The Warriors would add two more runs in the seventh to take a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) had a RBI double but the Warriors were able to hold on for the win.

Alyssa Van Valey (2-1) posted the win for Winona State (9-2), allowing two runs in 5.2 innings, while Jordyn Kleman had the save. Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) (0-2) took the loss for the Flyers. Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) went 2-for-3 for Lewis with a double.

Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) got the Flyers on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field. Taylor extended that lead in the fifth with a two-RBI single. Kavalauskas added a RBI groundout in the inning and Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) had a RBI single to finish off the scoring in the inning. Maddy Beck (Racine, Wis./Case) contributed a RBI single in the sixth inning.

Sanders (3-5) earned the shutout, allowing five hits, striking out four. Connor Proctor (3-4) took the loss for Ferris State (5-8), going 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs. Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland), Beck and Serena all had two hits to pace the Flyer offense.

Lewis has another double header in Florida Tuesday, facing off with Wayne State and Shepherd, beginning at 12:45 p.m. CT.
