O'FALLON, Mo. – Lewis' baseball team dropped a non-conference contest against Maryville 6-2 on Tuesday at Car Shield Field in O'Fallon, Mo. With the loss, the Flyers fall to 7-6 on the season while the Saints improve to 5-10.
Lewis baseball coach
Tim McDonough said for his team to be successful at the plate they have to compete better.
"We just have not swung the bats very well the past two days," he said. "Our guys have to learn what it really takes to compete at the plate at this level before we can have the type of success we all know we're capable.
Maryville got on the board first in this one scoring three times on two hits and two walks in the home half of the second. Derek Renner had the big hit in the inning driving in two runs with a single through the right side of the infield. The Saints scored their third run of the inning on a fielder's choice to short.
Maryville added to its lead with a run in the third. Cody Klotz tripled to left center with one out in the inning and then scored on a ground out to third.
The Flyers cut the Saint lead in half scoring two runs on three hits in the eighth. With two outs,
Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) singled and
Alex Kiszkowski (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) reached on a throwing error to put runners at second and third. A balk by Sam Danker allowed Post to score and then
Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) singled down the right field line to score Kiszkowski.
Ryan Schefske (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East), representing the tying run, flew out to center to end the inning.
Maryville regained its four run lead scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth taking advantage of a pair of walks and a two out double to right center off the bat of Renner.
Lewis got a runner on the ninth but was erased by a double play.
The Flyers recorded six hits in the contest with Rutherford recording two of them.
Andrew Tenison (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) got the start in the contest and suffered the loss allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout in two innings of work.
McDonough was pleased with how his pitchers performed on Tuesday.
"I thought overall we pitched pretty well today and that bodes well for us moving forward," he said.
