Late Rally Comes Up Short As Flyers Drop Series Finale At Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Lewis' baseball team's ninth inning rally came up a run short in its 11-10 loss at Southern Indiana on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers drop to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in GLVC play while the Screaming Eagles improve to 11-7, 4-2 in league play.

"I thought we competed much better today," Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said. "Unfortunately our defense let us down a time or two in crucial situations and Southern Indiana took advantage.

"We swung the bats well today and it was good to see a guy like Matt McCauley (Oakville, Mo./St. John Vianney) who hasn't had many at-bats have a good day and take advantage of his opportunity. Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence), Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove), Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) and Ryan Schefske (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) continue to give us consistency," he added. "Today's result hurt but we've got a quick turnaround in heading to Indy midweek so we just need to dust ourselves off and get back at it."

Southern Indiana jumped on top scoring four runs on five hits and a Lewis error in the home half of the second. Bryson McNay had the big hit in the inning driving in two with a double down the left field line. Bryce Krizan and Jacob Fleming also added RBI hits.

The Flyers countered with two in the third on a sacrifice fly from Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) and a triple from Rutherford.

The Screagles added to their lead with a run in the fourth but Lewis took the lead scoring four times in the fifth. Rios had the big hit in the inning blasting a three-run homer and McCauley scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.

The Flyers were unable to hold the lead as USI scored five unearned runs in its half of the fifth to regain a 10-6 lead. Lucas McNew hit a two-run homer in the inning.

The Screaming Eagles tacked on another run in the seventh on a sac fly to center to score Krizan.

Lewis got a run back in the eighth on a home run by Post with two out in the frame. Then in the ninth they tacked on three runs. Rutherford started the rally with a triple to center and scored on Schefske's single to left center. With one out in the inning McCauley hit a two-run homer to make it 11-10. Lewis got the go-ahead run in scoring position with two out but Cavalieri flied out to right to end the game.

The Flyers outhit USI 12-10 in the game and were led by Schefske with three while Post, Rutherford and McCauley had two each.

Robert Talarico (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) was the tough luck loser allowing five unearned runs in relief in 2.2 innings of work with four strikeouts.

Lewis is back in action on Wednesday as it travels to Indianapolis to take on the Greyhounds in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. (CT).
