Lewis Women’s Basketball Has 12 Game Winning Streak Snapped

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Lewis' women's basketball team had its 12-game winning streak snapped in an 89-67 loss at Truman State on Saturday afternoon in Kirksville, Mo. The Flyers drop to 25-3 overall and 16-2 in the GLVC while the Bulldogs improve to 22-6, 13-5 GLVC.

Lewis led by two early but Truman was on fire in the opening quarter hitting 9 of 12 shots to build a 13-point lead in the frame while Lewis struggled to get its offense going shooting 32 percent (5-for-16). Allison Thomas and Rachel Edmundson combined for 14 of Truman's points while Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South), Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) had three apiece for the Flyers.

Lewis cut the Bulldog lead to eight on a layup four minutes into the second quarter but the Bulldogs answered with 13-5 run over a 4:30 to build their largest lead of the half at 43-27 on a three-pointer in transition from Edmundson. The Flyers closed the half scoring five of the final seven points to trim Truman's lead to 13 at the half.

Lewis finished the half shooting 39 percent (13-for-33) from the floor, was 5-of-10 from three but only 1-for-4 at the foul line. Lockett led the Flyers with 13 points while Hinders and Kelliher had five each.

The Bulldogs were 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) from the floor in the half including 6-for-9 from three and shot 78 percent at the foul line.  Edmundson led all scorers with 14 points in the half while Thomas added 10 and Brooke Bailey and Makenzie Bray added seven points each.

Truman opened the third quarter on an 8-1 run to extend their lead to 20 less than two minutes into the quarter. Lewis got as close as 59-47 on a layup from Kelliher with 3:21 left in the quarter. The 'Dogs responded with an 8-3 run to close the out the quarter to take a 17 point lead into the final quarter.

Truman opened the final quarter scoring seven of the first eight points to extend their lead to its largest of the game at 74-51 on a pair of free throws from Katie Jaseckas with 7:37 left in the game. Lewis wouldn't get closer than 16 points the rest of the game.

Lockett led all scorers with 26 points while Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) finished with 12. Kelliher was held to just nine points in the contest snapping her consecutive game streak of reaching double figures in scoring at 89.

The Flyers ended the game shooting 40 percent (27-for-69) from the field, they were 9-for-23 from three but shot only 40 percent at the foul line. They were outrebounded in the contest 41-to-29.

Truman shot 52 percent (30-for-58) from the floor in the contest, was 9-of-20 from three and shot 91 percent at the foul line. The Bulldogs outscored Lewis 38-to-30 in the paint, 21-to-11 in points off turnovers and 24-to-15 in bench points.

Truman had six players reach double figures in scoring led by Edmundson with 19 while Jaseckas and Mackenzie Jerks had 13 points each while Bailey, Thomas and Sloane Totta chipped in with 10 points apiece.

The Flyers begin play in the GLVC tournament next Friday (March 8) as the number two seed at the Vadalabene Center on the campus of SIU Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Ill.
