EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' men's basketball team led Drury 67-60 with 2:24 left in overtime but the Panthers scored the final nine points of the game to defeat the Flyers 69-67 on Saturday in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Ill. Lewis drops to 24-5 on the year while Drury improves to 21-10.
The Flyers trailed for a majority of the second half before finally taking the 60-58 lead on a three-pointer from
Kendale McCullum (Elgin, Ill./Elgin Larkin) from 26 feet out with 0:29 remaining in regulation. The Panther's Allen Billinger tied the game 19 seconds later with a pair of free throws. Lewis had a chance to win the game but McCullum missed a three with 0:04 left and Drury got the rebound.
In the overtime period,
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) opened it up hitting a three-pointer and then after blocking a shot on the other end
Anthony D'Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) scored to make it a five-point lead 67 seconds into the frame. Neither side scored until
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) hit a layup to give the Flyers their largest lead of the game with 2:24 remaining.
The Panthers answered on the other end converting a four-point play. Conley Garrison hit a three-pointer from the top of the key and was fouled by McCullum. Garrison hit the free throw to cut the Lewis lead to three with 2:05 left. After a missed three by Blaylock, Billinger connected on his fifth three of the contest to even things at 67 with 93 seconds to go.
Donovan Oliver (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) had a chance to give the Flyers the lead back but his attempt from three was too strong. Drury then had a chance to take the lead but D'Avanzo blocked Garrison's layup attempt and
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) came away with the rebound.
McCullum drove to the basket and tried to score around Douglas Moore but Moore blocked the shot and Billinger came away with the rebound. He fired the pass ahead to Andrew Ballock who laid it in with 0:11 left to give the Panthers the lead.
Lewis had a chance to either tie or win the game and missed both. Pischke drove to the basket but his shot was blocked by Moore but Blaylock got the rebound. Blaylock fired up a three from the left wing as time was winding down but it was off the mark and Drury came away with the win.
The Flyers shot 39.7 percent (25-for-63) from the floor in the contest, were just 4-of-16 from three but did shoot 93 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Panthers 39-to-38 for the game.
McCullum led four Lewis players in double figures with 23 points while D'Avanzo added 13, Blaylock finished with 11 and Oliver contributed 10. McCullum had a game-high
eight assists and Blaylock grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds.
Billinger scored 22 of Drury's 26 bench points while Garrison added 21 points. The Panthers shot 42.6 percent (26-for-61) in the contest, including 13-of-24 from three.
The Flyers will find out on Sunday night if they'll host or have to go on the road for the NCAA Midwest Regional next weekend.
