ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University softball team earned a split with Wisconsin-Parkside, falling 1-0 in the opener and winning 6-1 in the finale Wednesday (April 17) in a nonconference doubleheader at the Lewis Softball Field. Lewis moves to 15-25 on the season, while Parkside is now 7-35.
Game 2: Lewis 6 Parkside 1
The Flyers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back.
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) belted a two-run homer to center field to open the scoring.
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) added to the lead in the bottom of the third when she homered to right center for a 3-0 lead.
Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) dealt the Rangers a crushing blow in the fifth inning when she hit a three-run home run to right center field to give the Flyers a 6-0 lead.
Parkside got on the board in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from Adrien Hall, but pitcher
Taylor Boelte (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) was able to strand two runners on base to end the game.
Boelte (2-2) earned the win, going the distance in the circle, allowing four hits and one earned run in the contest. Kate Czoschke (0-10) took the loss, going 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs.
Shaw went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Taylor and
Paige Glass (Herscher, Ill./Herscher) each walked twice, while Magaldi drove home three runs with her homer.
Game 2: Parkside 1 Lewis 0
The lone run in the game came in the fourth inning when Cassie Walek hit a home run to center field for the Rangers.
The best threat for Lewis came in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate) led off with a walk. After batter's interference,
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) singled.
Maddy Beck (Racine, Wis./Case) reached on a fielding error to load the bases with one out, but
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) lined to the third baseman, who stepped on third base to double up the runner.
Alyssa McClelland (4-2) picked up the win for Parkside, going seven innings, allowing one hits and three walks, striking out three.
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing four hits and one earned run.
Lewis returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference action Friday when it travels to Illinois Springfield for a doubleheader, beginning at 12 p.m.
