Late Rally Lifts Flyers To Split At Saint Xavier

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' softball team scored four runs in its final two at-bats to earn a split at Saint Xavier on Wednesday afternoon in Chicago. The Flyers are now 19-27 overall while the Cougars are 28-8.

Game 2 – Lewis 5 Saint Xavier 3
Saint Xavier scored twice in the second to take the early lead on a two-run single up the middle from Lexxie Lux.

Lewis got a run back in the third on Maddy Beck's (Racine, Wis./Case) double to left to score Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn).

The Cougars regained its two run advantage thanks to an unearned run in the fourth.

The Flyers tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single from Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) scoring Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Courtney Mahalik (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic).
Lewis added two more in the seventh on Elexis Swartzentruber's (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) two run double down the left field line.

The Flyers outhit SXU 10-7 in the nightcap with Swartzentruber leading the way with four hits while Beck and Magaldi had two each. Sanders evened her record at 9-9 by going the distance allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Game 1 – Saint Xavier 2 Lewis 1
All of the runs in the opener were scored in the first inning of the contest.

Lewis jumped out to the early thanks to a two-out rally. Taylor started the rally with a single up the middle and went to third on Swartzentruber's single. Shaw drove in Taylor with an infield single to second.
The Cougars scored their runs on a two-run homer to center off the bat of Taylor Sterkowitz.

The Flyers had their chances leaving seven runners on base over the final six innings but were unable to get the key hit. Their best chance came in the sixth getting the tying run to third but Allie Piatt was tagged out at the plate on a bunt representing the tying run.

Lewis was outhit 7-6 in game one with Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate) leading the way with two hits. Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) suffered the defeat allowing two runs on four hits and issued two walks in her inning of work.

The Flyers return home on Friday hosting Southern Indiana in a doubleheader at Lewis Softball Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
