Game 1 – Lewis 11, Quincy 0 seven innings
The Flyers took it to Quincy in the opener scoring in every inning while outhitting them 15-2.
Pete Hamot (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) held the Hawks without a hit until the fourth inning.
Lewis scored an unearned run in the first as
Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) reached on an error and scored on
Ryan Schefske's (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) single. The Flyers added to their lead in the second on
Brandon Post's (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) two-run single up the middle to drive in
Matt Verdun (Homer Glen, Ill./St. Rita) and
Austin Tittle (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) to make it 3-0.
Tittle hit a three-run homer to right in the third to extend the Lewis lead to 6-0. Rutherford made it 7-0 in the fourth driving in
Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Flyers added two more in the fifth on
Michael O'Brien's (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) double to left that scored Tittle and Post drove in another run with a fielder's choice groundout to make it 9-0.
Tittle drove in his fourth run of the game with a single to right to bring in Schefske with the 10th run. Cavalieri added the final run with a solo shot to left in the seventh.
Tittle and Schefske led the offense with three hits each while Cavalieri, Verdun and
Matt McCauley (Oakville, Mo./St. John Vianney) had two apiece. Tittle and Post combined to drive in seven runs in the contest.
Hamot went the distance holding a Quincy team that entered the day with a .274 batting average to just two singles and two walks while striking out five to improve to 4-2 on the season.
"Pete was outstanding today and put the team on his back," Lewis head baseball coach
Tim McDonough said. "I really feel the rest of the guys fed off of his performance.
"Offensive what can you say," he continued. "We scored in every inning and it was the most complete game we've played all year. Tittle's blast was huge but I thought everybody 1-9 grinded out good at-bat's and we got a lot of clutch two out hits."
Game 2 Lewis 6, Quincy 5
Blake Marks (Gardner, Ill./Gardner-South Wilmington) worked out of a bases loaded nobody out jam in the bottom of the first getting two strikeouts and a ground out to keep the game scoreless.
Lewis took the lead in the third on
Dalton Crowder's (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) lead-off home run to right. The Flyers added to their lead scoring five times in the fifth. Verdun had the big hit in the inning driving in two with a single through the left side of the infield scoring Cavalieri and Rutherford to make it 6-0.
The Hawks cut into the lead on a two-run home run off the bat of Chandler Purcell with one out in the fifth.
The score remained that way until the ninth.
Robert Talarico (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) retired two of the first three hitters he faced but a hit-by-pitch and a single to center made it 6-3 game and brought the tying run to the plate. Lance Logsdon reached on an error by Post in center which allowed two runs to score and put the tying run at third base. Verdun came in and ended it on four pitches retiring Jacob Kalusniak on a ground ball to short to end the game.
Lewis outhit Quincy 8-7 in the contest and was led by Post with two. Verdun led the way with two RBI. Marks picked up the win allowing two runs on five hits in six innings of work. Verdun retired the only hitter he faced to earn his fourth save of the season.
"I thought Blake getting out of a bases loaded nobody out jam in the first inning was big momentum changer," McDonough said. "We were able to take advantage of a Quincy error to extend the lead and Matt really came through with a big two out hit to give us a cushion.
"It's never easy to close a team like Quincy out and we certainly made it interesting in the ninth but we did just enough to close the game out to come away with a much needed sweep."
The Flyers and Hawks wrap up their series with a single game on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
