ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader at No. 17 Indianapolis, 4-0 and 7-4 on Saturday afternoon at Baumgartner Field in Indianapolis, Ind. The Flyers fall to 11-21 on the season and are 4-10 in the GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 30-10, 10-4 GLVC.
Game 2 – Indianapolis 7, Lewis 4
Lewis jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on four hits.
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and Maddie Beck started the game with back-to-back singles.
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt to first.
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) drove in the first two runs with a single down the right field line. Shaw then advanced to second on a groundout and scored on
Sara Serena's (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) double to right. Later in the inning, Serena advanced to third on a wild pitch and would score on a wild pitch with two away.
Indianapolis tied the game in its half of the first scoring four runs on three hits. Gianni Iannantone had the big hit in the inning driving in two with a double. Haylie Foster doubled in Taylor Danielson to make it 4-3 and Brooke Montgomery doubled home Foster to even the score.
The 'Hounds took the lead in the second on back-to-back doubles from Hanna Burris and Sydnie Foster to begin the inning.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) was able to limit the damage to just one run by retiring the next three batters.
The Flyers had chances in the third and fourth innings to tie the score getting a runner to second base in each inning but were unable to plate the tying run.
UIndy tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on a two-run double from Iannantone.
Lewis brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the seventh but a fly out to right and a strikeout ended the game.
Serena led the Flyer offensive attack with three hits while Beck and Shaw had two hits apiece. Shaw drove in a pair of runs.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) took the loss allowing three runs, two earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts in 5.1 of relief work.
Game 1 – Indianapolis, 4 Lewis 0
Lewis' offense had a hard time figuring out Halie Waters in the opener as she no-hit the Flyers on six strikeouts and a walk in facing the minimum. The Greyhounds got all the offense they needed scoring two runs in the second and sixth innings. H. Foster drove in a pair of runs while Iannantone and Danielson drove in a run each.
Shaw took the loss in the opener allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
The Flyers are back at home on Monday (April 8) taking on Saginaw Valley State in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the Lewis Softball Field.
