OZARK, Mo. – Lewis' baseball team was eliminated from the GLVC Baseball Tournament in a 16-4 loss to Drury on Friday at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark, Mo. The Flyers end their season with a record of 27-24 while the Panthers improve to 30-22.
Drury used a two-out rally in the top of the first scoring a pair of runs to take the early lead. Lewis recorded back-to-back hits to begin the game and a sacrifice fly from
Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) drove in
Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) with the Flyers first run to cut the Panther lead to 2-1.
Drury used another two-out rally in the fourth scoring four runs on five hits to extend its lead. Lewis appeared to be out of the inning on a caught stealing but the call was overturned on review and Brandt Ollinger made them pay with an RBI single. Brandt Schaffitzel had the big hit inning with a triple to the gap in left center.
The Flyers strung three straight singles together in their half of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-2.
Austin Tittle (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) singled to drive in
Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence).
The Panthers added two in the fifth and then broke it open with a five run sixth to expand their lead to 13-2.
Lewis scored twice in the eighth on a groundout to short and a throwing error by the shortstop later in the inning. Drury closed out the scoring with three runs in the ninth.
The Flyers finished with 10 hits in the contest and were led by Post and Rutherford with two apiece.
Blake Marks (Gardner, Ill./Gardner-South Wilmington) suffered the loss allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts to end the season 5-4.
