EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The Lewis softball team saw its 2019 season come to an end with a pair of losses on Friday at the GLVC Tournament in East Peoria, Ill. The Flyers, seeded eighth in the event, dropped the opener to top seeded Missouri-St. Louis 3-0 and lost their second game to fourth seeded Maryville 7-5 in eight innings.
Game 1 – Missouri-St. Louis 3, Lewis 0
Lewis' offense was held in check by Carly Kingery in the contest as she allowed three hits and two walks while striking out 10 in the contest. The Flyers left six runners in the contest.
The Tritons (32-17) got single tallies in the first, third and sixth innings. Andee Tiffee put UMSL in front with an RBI double to right to drive in Morgan Hill with the first run of the game. Reagan Osborn hit a solo home run to center with one out in the third to extend the lead to 2-0. Osborn drove in her second run of the game with a single up the middle to drive in Morgan Skyles with the final run of the contest.
Maddy Beck (Racine, Wis./Case),
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) and
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) had a hit apiece for the Flyers.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) got the start allowing two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Shaw went the final 3.2 innings allowing a run on five hits and a pair of punchouts.
Game 2 – Maryville 7, Lewis 5 8 innings
Lewis grabbed the early lead in the elimination game as Beck led off the game with a triple to center and scored on
Morgan Weber's (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) squeeze bunt to make it 1-0.
The Saints (33-19) evened the score with an unearned run in the third inning on an RBI single from Bri Livingston that brought in Shaina Kmetz.
The Flyers regained the lead in the fourth on
Lauren Brennan's (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate) two-out single to center scoring
Courtney Mahalik (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic).
Maryville took its first lead of the game in the fifth scoring three times on four hits and an error. Jaclyn Pasakarnis had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double to left.
Down to its final two outs of the season, Lewis rallied with four straight hits and tied the game on
Elexis Swartzentruber's (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) single to left to score Weber. The Flyers had two cracks to take the lead but a foulout and a groundout ended the inning.
The Saints scored three runs on three hits and an error in the eighth to regain the lead. Pasakarnis scored on a passed ball to make it 5-4 and Samantha Hausl made it 6-4 with a triple to right center. Kmetz drove in the final run with a single to center.
The Flyers got a run back in its final at-bat as Beck singled home
Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) with two outs to bring Weber to the plate representing the tying run but unfortunately she lined out to second to end the game.
Lewis outhit Maryville 13-11 in the contest with Beck going 5-for-5 in the contest while Swartzentruber had a pair of hits. Shaw pitched the first six innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts before being removed because of injury. Sanders went the final two innings allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits with a strikeout.
The Flyers wrap up their season with a record of 22-30 and advanced to postseason play for the first time since 2015.
