ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The fifth ranked Lewis women's volleyball team picked up pair of sweeps on Friday at Molloy College in Rockville Centre, N.Y. The Flyers opened the day with a straight set win over Holy Family (Pa.) and followed it up sweeping New Haven to improve to 9-1 on the season.
Lewis 3 Holy Family 0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-23)
Lewis used a 13-4 run to turn an early three-point deficit into a 15-9 lead in the opening set on their way to a 25-16 win. The Flyers hit .281 in the frame while holding the Tigers (4-4) to a .026 attack percentage.
Lewis raced out to an early five-point lead in the second set and never looked back leading by as many as 16 in the stanza. Holy Family ran off four straight points to cut the lead to 24-12 before
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) ended the set with a kill.
The Flyers led by as many as four late in the third set and had four match points but the Tigers ran off three in a row to cut the Lewis lead to 24-23 after an ace.
Caroline Stefanon (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) ended the match on the next rally with her match-high 10th kill.
The Flyers finished the contest hitting .250 (37 kills/11 errors/104 total chances) while holding Holy Family to an attack percentage of negative .009 (21k/22e/107ta).
Stefanon was the lone player to reach double figures in kills.
Haley Sobieralski (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) had 21 assists while
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg) led the way with 15 digs.
Lewis 3 New Haven 0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-16)
In Lewis' second match of the day it had four ties in the opening set before pulling away late thanks to an 8-4 run. The Flyers had two aces in the run and got kills from
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian), Stefanon, Schlechte and three from
Colleen Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) to win the opener 25-20.
Lewis used a 12-3 run midway through the second set to extend its lead from four to 13 points before the Chargers (3-5) made a late run to cut the margin to 24-15. Venema finished the set off with her fourth kill of the frame.
The Flyers led by as many as 10 points thanks to a late run before settling for the nine point victory. Lewis hit .321 in the third set and was led by
Alexandra Preuss (Elmhurst, Ill./York) with five kills while Venema and Schlechte added four kills apiece.
Preuss and Schlechte led the way with 11 kills apiece while Venema added 10.
Mikah Freppon (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) finished with 33 assists and Schlechte added 12 digs for a double-double.
The Flyers return to the court on Saturday taking on Molloy College at 12 p.m. (CDT) in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
