Flyers Defeat Hawks 70-54 To Extend Win Streak To Five

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team extended its win streak to five with a 70-54 win over Quincy at Pepsi Arena on Thursday evening in Quincy, Ill. The Flyers improve to 9-5 overall and 6-0 in the GLVC while the Hawks fell to 5-9, 1-5 GLVC.

Lewis got off to a hot start hitting five of its first six shots to build a 12-4 lead 3:30 minutes into the game. Quincy cut the lead to four scoring six of the next eight points with less than five minutes to play in the opening quarter.

The Flyers closed the quarter strong scoring the final nine points to take a 23-10 lead by the end of the quarter.

Lewis extended its lead 15 points early in the in the second quarter on a pair of free throws by Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston). The Flyers still led by double digits with 4:09 left in the stanza before the Hawks went on a 12-2 run over the next 2:18 to cut Lewis' lead to two points after a pair of free throws from Amanda Porth.

Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) hit a big three from the right wing with 0:46 left in the half to give the Flyers a 35-30 lead at the intermission.

Lewis extended its lead to 10 points midway through the third quarter but Quincy continued to hang around cutting the deficit to five with 1:13 left on a jumper from Laney Lantz.

Alyssa Streeter (Chicago, Ill./Jones Prep) extended the lead back to eight with a three near the top of the key but Dami Adeyinka hit a jumper in the paint to make it a six-point game heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Flyers led by 10 in the final quarter but Quincy cut the margin to seven with less than four minutes to play on a layup by Marta Rivera.

Williams sparked a game clinching 9-0 run hitting a three with 3:53 left, Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) had key offensive rebound and putback and Lewis hit its final four attempts at the foul line to seal the victory.

The Flyers shot over 48 percent (25-for-52) from the field in the contest, was 8-of-21 from three and shot 86 percent at the foul line. Hinders led four players in double figures with 16 points while Gardner and Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) had 14 points apiece and Williams finished with 12.

Lantz led the Hawks with a game-high 23 points.

Lewis continues its three-game road trip on Saturday as it heads to Kirksville to take on Truman State at 1 p.m.
