INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) hit three free throws with 3.3 seconds left to lift Lewis' women's basketball team to a 73-70 win at Indianapolis on Thursday evening at Nicoson Hall. The Flyers remain unbeaten in GLVC play at 2-0 and improve to 5-5 overall while the Greyhounds fall to 8-2, 1-1 GLVC.
Lewis trailed by as many as 13 in the contest but were able to chip away at the deficit and got it to eight heading into the final 10 minutes.
The two sides swapped baskets to begin the final quarter then the Flyers went on a 12-0 run to take its first lead since late in the first quarter at 68-66 on a layup by
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) with 3:50 to play in the contest.
Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) blocked McKenzy Telfair's shot attempt to tie the game and Williams scored on the break to give Lewis its largest lead of the game at 70-66 with 3:24 remaining.
UIndy responded on the next possession as Shira Sasson scored on a layup and then after a Flyer miss, Laura Thomas was fouled on a drive to the basket as the shot clock was winding down. She hit both free throws to even the score at 70.
Neither scored for the next two minutes as the defenses took control. Glatczak blocked two Hound shots in the span of four seconds to keep the game tied. Lewis had a chance to regain the lead but Hinders was blocked by Paige Barrett with 0:45 left.
UIndy had a chance to regain the lead but Emma Benoit was called for a three second violation with 27.6 seconds left to set up the final possession.
The Flyers held for the final shot as Williams shot a three with 0:07 left but was fouled as she was returning to the floor by Thomas. Williams hit all three free throws to put Lewis up three.
The Greyhounds called a timeout to advance the ball to midcourt to setup a game tying attempt. Thomas got a shot off at the buzzer but it was off the mark to end the game.
Hinders led all scorers with 24 points, 18 in the second half, while
Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) added 15, Williams finished with 14 and
Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) scored 11 off the bench. Glatczak blocked seven shots and finished with eight rebounds.
The Flyers shot over 45 percent from the floor in the contest, was 7-of-16 from three and shot 78 percent at the foul line. Lewis' defense held UIndy to 2-of-19 shooting in the fourth quarter.
The Hounds were led in scoring by Barrett with 20 points while Telfair added 16 and Thomas finished with 15 points. UIndy outrebounded the Flyers 40-to-33 in the contest.
Lewis concludes its three-game road trip with a visit to Louisville on Saturday to take on Bellarmine at 12 p.m. (CST). The Knights defeated Illinois Springfield 58-42 on Thursday.
