ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team remained unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play defeating Lindenwood 86-75 on Thursday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 12-5, 9-0 GLVC while the Lions fall to 9-6, 5-4 GLVC.
Lewis led early in the contest but Lindenwood outscored the Flyers 10-2 over the final six minutes of the opening frame to take an 18-13 lead at the quarter break.
The Lions extended their lead to nine points four minutes into the second quarter marking their largest lead of the contest.
Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) ignited a run hitting a three-pointer with 5:43 left in the stanza. It resulted in 14 straight points for the Flyers as they built a five-point lead. Black accounted for half of the points in that run.
Lindenwood cut the deficit to four at the half as Lindsay Medlen hit a shot before the buzzer.
Lewis opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run to extend is lead to 48-35 after a layup by
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) with less than five minutes to play in the quarter.
The Lions got as close as six in the quarter when Kallie Bildner converted an old fashioned three-point play but
Grace Hilber's (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) three late in the quarter extended the lead back to nine heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Flyers opened the fourth quarter strong outscoring Lindenwood 10-4 over the first 2:15 to build its largest lead of the night at 66-51 on a three-pointer from Hilber.
The Lions cut the lead to five points in the final 1:35, but Lewis sealed the victory at the foul line hitting 9-of-10 free throws in the final 64 seconds.
Five Flyers reached double figures in scoring led by Hinders with her game-high 25 points and seven rebounds. Black added 16 points and six assists,
Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) finished with 14 points while
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) dropped home 13 points and Hilber finished with 10 points.
Lewis shot over 52 percent (30-for-57) from the floor in the contest, was 11-of-22 from three and shot 83 percent (15-for-18) at the charity stripe. The Flyers outrebounded Lindenwood 35-to-32.
Medlen led the Lions with 22 points while Bildner added 17 points and Julia Ruzevich finished with 15 points. Bildner added another double-double to her resume with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Lindenwood was held to 45 percent (29-for-64) shooting in the contest, was 6-of-19 from three and shot 79 percent at the foul line.
Lewis is back at home on Saturday taking on Missouri-St. Louis at 1 p.m. It's Lewis Athletic Alumni Day at Neil Carey Arena. The women's basketball team will be hosting their alumni game in the fieldhouse at 10:30 a.m.
