ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' women's basketball team struggled offensively in a 52-46 loss to Indianapolis on Thursday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers drop to 12-7, 9-2 GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 14-5, 7-4 GLVC.
Lewis fell behind 8-0 to start the game and was held to just two points over the first six minutes. Indianapolis extended its lead to as many as 12 in the opening stanza as it held the Flyers to a total of seven points and just 3-of-19 (16 percent) shooting.
Lewis opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run getting eight points from
Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) in the run to cut the Greyhound lead to two. The Flyers had a couple of chances to tie or take the lead but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities. UIndy extended its lead to 10 points with 1:31 left in the period but Lewis was able to cut it to single digits right before the half on a basket from
Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago).
The Flyers opened the third quarter on a 10-1 run to take its first lead of the contest at 29-28 on a three-pointer from
Madison Mallory (Geneva, Ill./Geneva). The Hounds quickly regained the lead on Liz Alsot's jumper. Mallory came down on the other end to hit a another shot to put Lewis back in front but that would be its last lead of the night.
Marissa Knobloch hit back-to-back three's to put UIndy back in front for good. The Flyers were able to cut the lead to three points by the end of the quarter.
Lewis cut the lead to one multiple times in the final quarter but were unable to get over the hump as the Greyhounds answered each Flyer basket and hit three free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.
Black led Lewis with 12 points while
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Mallory added eight points off the bench. The Flyers were held to single season lows in points, field goals made (16) and field goal percentage (25.4 percent). Lewis was unable to control UIndy in the paint as the Hounds outscored the Flyers 22-14 underneath.
Laura Thomas led all scorers with 13 points while Shira Sasson added 11 points. UIndy shot over 46 percent (20-for-43) from the field, was 4-of-11 from three and shot 53 percent at the foul line.
Lewis concludes its four-game homestand on Saturday hosting Bellarmine at 1 p.m.
