Story Links

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 70-52 loss to McKendree on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. Both the Flyers and the Bearcats head into the holiday break with records of 3-2 overall and in the GLVC.

Bruno Williams (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Marquise Jackson (Macon, Ga./Windsor Academy) led the Flyers with 11 points each while Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) added eight and Trevian Bell (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) finished with six points. Atakan Sahinkaya (Istanbul, Turkey/Perkiomen School) and Brandon McCombs (Jacksonville, Ill./Jacksonville) had six rebounds apiece.

McKendree started the game on fire knocking down their first six shots including four from beyond the arc to race out to a 20-5 lead less than five minutes into the game. The Bearcats lead eventually grew to 24 points with less than eight minutes to play in the opening half.

Lewis cut the lead to 14 as part of a 12-2 run over a four-minute stretch but McKendree closed the half scoring the final six points to take a 20-point lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Flyers made another run in the second half to get within 58-47 on a put back by McCombs with less than seven minutes to play but that would be the closest they got as the Bearcats ended the game on a 12-5 run for the final margin.

Lewis was held to 39 percent (19-for-49) shooting in the contest, was 4-of-13 (31 percent) from three and shot 63 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded McKendree 32-29 but turned the ball over 14 times which resulted in 17 points for McKendree.

After their hot start, the Bearcats finished the game shooting 41 percent (19-for-46) from the field, they were 11-of-30 (37 percent) from three and shot 91 percent (21-for-23) from the foul line.

The Flyers will take a break for the holidays and are scheduled to return to action on Sunday (Jan. 3) at Rockhurst at 3 p.m.
