ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' women's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss on Thursday with a 71-63 win over Missouri S&T on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers are now 15-9, 12-4 GLVC while the Miners fall to 7-16, 3-13 GLVC.
Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) scored the first nine points of the contest for Lewis but only led by four as S&T stayed close on three's from Maddie Raley and Marta Durk.
The Flyers outscored the Miners 13-4 over the final 5:15 of the opening quarter to take a 13-point advantage into the second quarter. Lewis shot over 47 percent from the floor while S&T was limited to 25 percent shooting.
The Miners got hot in the second quarter shooting over 60 percent from the field and were able to cut the Flyer lead to four with less than a minute to play in the half but Lewis responded with the final seven points of the half including Gardner's buzzer-beating three to take a 43-32 lead into the locker room.
S&T got to within five a couple of times in the third quarter but once again Lewis was able to hold them at bay extending the lead to 10 points by the end of the quarter on a three-pointer from
Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) with 0:38 remaining in the stanza.
The Flyers led by double digits for a majority of the final quarter until Raley hit a three with under a minute to play for the final margin.
Gardner led four Lewis players in double figures with 16 points while
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) added 13 points, Hinders finished with 12 points and nine rebounds and
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) chipped in with 10 points. Hinders also had six assists.
The Flyers shot 37.7 percent (23-for-61) from the floor for the contest, were 10-of-27 from three and shot 75 percent at the foul. Lewis outrebounded S&T 46-to-31 and its bench outscored the Miners bench 33-to-5.
Mykala Baylor led all players with 18 points and 16 rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Raley with 16 points and Durk finished with 10 points. S&T shot 43.5 percent (27-for-62) from the field, was 9-of-26 from three but was 0-for-6 at the foul line.
The Flyers play their final home game of the season next Thursday (Feb. 20) hosting McKendree at 5:30 p.m.
