EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Lewis' men's basketball team lost at Southern Indiana 85-82 in the NCAA Division II Showcase game at Screaming Eagle Arena in Evansville, Ind., on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers fall to 13-13, 8-10 GLVC while the Screaming Eagles improve to 21-5, 13-5 GLVC.
The game was a back-and-forth affair all afternoon as there were 12 ties and six lead changes in the contest.
USI opened the game on a 7-0 run over the first 2:30 minutes before
Artese Stapleton (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) got Lewis on the board with a layup.
The Flyers took their first lead of the contest at 13-11 on a jumper by
Austin Boucher (Markle, Ind./Fort Wayne North Side) as part of an 11-2 run.
Lewis extended its lead to 21-16 but an 11-2 run from the Screaming Eagles allowed USI to regain the lead at 27-23 on a layup by Emmanuel Little.
The Flyers evened things at 29 on a jumper from
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) with less than two minutes to play in the half but the Eagles scored four points in the span of 0:19 to regain the lead at 33-29.
Anthony D'Avanzo's (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) layup shortly before halftime cut the USI lead to 35-34 at the break.
Southern Indiana extended its lead to five four minutes into the second half, but Lewis had an answer going on a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to take its largest lead of the contest at 53-47 on a pair of D'Avanzo free throws.
The Screaming Eagles came back to tie things at 56 after two free throws by Clayton Hughes with 10:36 left in the game.
The two sides traded baskets for the next 2:17 and were still tied at 61 when Stapleton put the Flyers in front with a three-pointer.
Mateo Rivera answered Stapleton's three with five straight points of his own to give USI a 66-64 lead with 7:14 to play.
With the score knotted at 68, Kobe Caldwell broke the deadlock with a three-pointer to put the Eagles ahead for good and Lewis wouldn't get closer than three points the rest of the contest.
USI hit all six of its free throws in the final 0:40 seconds to secure the victory.
The Flyers had five players reach double figures in scoring and were led by D'Avanzo and Pischke with 18 points apiece.
Austin Boucher (Markle, Ind./Fort Wayne North Side) added a career-high 14 points off the bench while Stapleton finished with 12 and Bell had 11. D'Avanzo had six rebounds in the contest.
Lewis shot over 51 percent (29-for-56) from the field for the game, was 9-of-20 from three and shot 94 percent at the charity stripe. The Flyers were outrebounded in the contest 35-to-24.
The Screaming Eagles also shot 51 percent (33-for-64) from the floor in the contest, were 7-of-14 from three and shot 92 percent at the foul line. Josh Price led all scorers with 22 points. He was joined in double figures by Rivera with 18 points, Hughes finished with 13 points, Caldwell added 12 points while Little dropped home 11 points.
Lewis continues its four-game road trip at Missouri-St. Louis next Thursday beginning at 7:30 p.m.
