Lewis Women’s Hoops Defeats Southern Indiana 74-58 In NCAA Division II Showcase Game

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Lewis' women's basketball team outscored Southern Indiana 30-18 in the fourth quarter in its 74-58 win at Screaming Eagle Arena on Saturday afternoon in Evansville, Ind. The Flyers improve to 17-9, 14-4 GLVC while the Screaming Eagles fall to 17-7, 13-5 GLVC.

Rachel Hinders (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) and Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) combined for 11 of Lewis' 15 points in the opening quarter to give the Flyers a nine-point lead heading into the second quarter.

Lewis opened the second quarter on an 8-4 run to extend its lead to 23-10 after a pair of free throws by Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI).

USI cut the margin to nine, but the Flyers closed the quarter on a 5-2 run to take a 28-16 lead into halftime.

The Screaming Eagles opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run to cut the Flyer lead to six but Lewis answered with five straight points to extend its lead back to double digits.

However, USI was able to cut the Flyer lead to 44-40 by end of the quarter.

The Screaming Eagles opened the final quarter on a 5-1 run to tie the score but Hilber hit a three-pointer from the left wing on the ensuing possession to give Lewis the lead for good and sparked a 9-2 run.

USI wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the way as the Flyers hit a couple of big three's down the stretch and were 8-of-10 at the foul line in the final four minutes.

The Flyers heated up from beyond the arc in the second half hitting eight of their final nine three-point attempts and shot 60 percent (9-of-15) from the perimeter in the second half.

Hinders led four Lewis players in double figures with 22 points while Gardner added 19, Hilber finished with 15 and Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) dropped in 10 points. Morgan Glatczak (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) had a game-high 12 rebounds while Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) finished with 10 boards.

The Flyers shot over 41 percent (22-for-53) from the field in the contest, was 11-of-27 (41 percent) from three and shot 83 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Screaming Eagles 43-to-35 and had 16 assists on 22 made field goals.

Ashley Johnson led USI with 21 points while Hannah Haithcock added 15 points. The Screaming Eagles shot 34.8 percent (23-for-66) from the floor, were 3-of-16 from three and shot 75 percent at the foul line.

Lewis continues its four-game road trip at Missouri-St. Louis next Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
