NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lewis' baseball team got great pitching, solid defense and timely hitting in its 5-1 win at Trevecca Nazarene on Friday evening. The Flyers improve to 2-2 while the Trojans fall to 3-8.
"When you throw strikes and play defense like that you're going to win a lot of ball games and we did both of those things very well today," Lewis head baseball coach
Tim McDonough said.
Brad Littleton (Coal City, Ill./) and
Ryan Ward (Hanover Park, Ill./Hoffman Estates) combined to hold Trevecca to one run on six hits in the contest. Littleton started and allowed one run on five hits with 11 strikeouts over six innings to earn the victory. Ward came on in the seventh and retired eight of the 10 hitters he faced to pick up the save.
"Brad had swing and miss stuff all night and when he has all of his pitches working he's tough to beat," McDonough said. Ryan came in and gave us three solid innings in a tight game."
Offensively, Lewis tied the game in the second on
Chris Zeschke's (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) solo home run to left field with two outs in the frame.
The Flyers took the lead in the third on
Anthony Cavalieri's (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) double to left center that scored
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) from first.
TNU had a chance to tie the game in the sixth on John O'Dwyer's triple to right center with one out in the inning but Littleton got out of the jam striking out the next two hitters to end the inning.
Lewis added an insurance run in the eighth.
Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) led off the inning with a triple to center and scored on Cavalieri's sacrifice fly to center.
The Flyers weren't done adding two more runs in the ninth. With the bases loaded and no one out
Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) brought home
Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence) with a sacrifice fly to left center. Keaty followed with a single down the left field line to drive in
Dalton Crowder (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East).
Lewis out hit the Trojans 9-6 in the contest and were led by Zeschke, Cavalieri, Preusser and Keaty with two hits apiece.
"Offensively, we did just enough and the guys did a great job executing in the eighth and ninth innings to give us some breathing room," McDonough said. "They really battled and had some competitive at-bats."
The Flyers are back on the diamond on Saturday taking on Saginaw Valley State at 12 p.m. followed by another game against Trevecca Nazarene at 3:30 p.m.
