ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Lewis' men's basketball team second half rally ran out of time in its 79-73 loss at Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon at Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Mo.
The Flyers led early on
Artese Stapleton's (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) jumper but the Lions (12-16, 6-14 GLVC) scored the next five points to take the lead and wouldn't relinquish it. Lewis trailed 13-10 after a pair of free throws by
Adam Pischke (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) with less than 14 minutes to play in the opening half.
The Flyers were held scoreless for nearly five minutes as Lindenwood went on an 11-0 run to extend its lead to double digits. Lewis cut the Lion lead to 29-21 on two more Pischke free throws with 7:04 remaining in the half.
The Lions dominated the final seven minutes of the half outscoring the Flyers 23-8 to take a 52-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The two sides swapped baskets for the first 6:30 minutes of the second as Lindenwood still led 64-43.
Lewis cut the lead to 14 points with seven straight points, but the Lions countered with five straight points to push its lead back to 19 at 69-50 with 8:40 to play.
The Flyers went on a 15-0 run over the next 3:34 to get within 69-65 on a jumper by
Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) with 5:06 remaining.
The game remained between four to six points over the next four minutes, but Lewis was unable to get any closer than four as Lindenwood hit 4-of-7 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
The Flyers finished the game shooting 39 percent (25-for-64) from the field, was 8-of-20 from three and shot 79 percent at the foul line.
Anthony D'Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) finished with a double-double recording 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds to lead Lewis. Stapleton finished with 16 points while
Brandon McCombs (Jacksonville, Ill./Jacksonville) added 10 points.
The Lions shot 46 percent (28-for-61) from the floor in the game, was 5-of-24 from thee and shot 72 percent at the foul line. They outrebounded the Flyers 41-to-39. Lindenwood finished the game with six players reaching double figures in scoring and were led by TJ Crockett with 17 points while Anthony Christian added 16 points off the bench.
Lewis finishes its season with a record of 13-15 overall and 8-12 in the GLVC.
