SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Lewis' men's basketball team shot a season-high 67.3 percent but it wasn't enough in an 84-82 loss at Drury on Thursday evening. The Flyers fall to 10-11, 5-8 GLVC while the Panthers improve to 14-7, 7-6 GLVC.
Lewis got off to fantastic start scoring the first 13 points of the game and hit its first 12 shots from the field but only lead 48-45 at the half despite shooting 80 percent (20-for-25) from the field. Drury missed its first six shots of the game but shot 69 percent from the floor over the final 16 minutes of the half.
The Flyers extended their lead to as many as six points with less than 12 minutes to play in the contest but were unable to shake loose of the Panthers. Lewis still led by two with 7:33 but Drury responded with eight straight points, six at the foul line, to take its first lead of the contest with four minutes to play.
The Flyers cut the lead to 77-75 with less than a minute to go on a layup from
Brandon McCombs (Jacksonville, Ill./Jacksonville). The Panthers responded on the other end as Isaac Johnson converted a layup on the break to extend the lead back to four.
Adam Pischke's (Cary, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) three-point attempt with 0:32 rattled out and Johnson came away with the rebound. Lewis was forced to foul and sent Johnson to the line where he hit 1-of-2 to extend the lead to five.
Anthony D'Avanzo (Harwood Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) dunked one home in transition to make it a one possession game with 0:21 left. Lane Duncan broke loose and scored on a home run pass with 0:16 left. D'Avanzo made it a one possession game once again with another dunk with 0:07 left.
Johnson left the door open a little bit hitting only 1-of-2 at the foul line to make it 83-79.
Artese Stapleton (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) hit a three in transition with 0:01 left but it wasn't enough as Cal Hartley hit 1-of-2 free throws to seal the win for Drury.
The Flyers shot 56 percent (15-for-27) in the second half but the Panthers were slightly better hitting 12-of-19 shots (63.2 percent).
Lewis finished the game shooting 35-for-52 from the field, shot 53 percent from three but was just 4-of-8 at the foul line. The Flyers turned the ball over 15 times which Drury turned into 18 points. D'Avanzo led Lewis with 25 points while Pischke added 17 points, Stapleton had 16 points and McCombs finished with 11 points.
Conley Garrison matched D'Avanzo for the game-high in scoring with 25 points to lead three Panthers in double figures. Hartley added 14 points while Duncan finished with 13 points.
The Flyers will look to snap their four-game losing streak on Saturday at Southwest Baptist at 3 p.m.
