EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team defeated Indianapolis 63-50 on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2020 GLVC Women's Basketball Tournament at First Community Arena at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Ill. The Flyers improve to 18-11 while the Greyhounds finish their season with a record of 19-10.
Lewis, seeded third, raced out to an early eight-point lead only to see UIndy, seeded sixth, respond with an 11-0 run to take a 13-10 lead on a layup by Paige Barrett.
The Flyers tied the game at 15 near the end of the quarter on a three-pointer from
Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie).
Lewis opened the second quarter on a 12-2 run to build a 10-point advantage on
Stephanie Hart's (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) layup with 4:06 left in the half. The Hounds cut the lead to eight, but the Flyers got a layup from Hinders and two free throws from
Dajae Black (Chicago, Ill./Marist) to take its largest lead of the half at 31-19 with 2:11 remaining in the frame.
UIndy got a layup from Emma Benoit in the closing seconds of the stanza to cut Lewis' lead to 10 points at the intermission.
The Greyhounds scored the first bucket of the second but then the Flyers ran off 18 points in a row to take its biggest lead of the game at 49-23 on a layup from Hinders.
UIndy finished the quarter on an 11-1 run over the final 2:25 to cut Lewis' lead to 16 heading into the final quarter.
The Flyers scored six of the first nine points in the final stanza to extend its lead to 19 on two free throws from Hinders with less than 6:30 minutes to play.
The Hounds ran off six straight points to get within 13 but that was the closest they got as Lewis responded with a 7-0 run to stretch its lead back to 20.
UIndy scored the final seven points of the contest to cut the final margin to 13 points.
Hinders led all scorers with 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field and was 4-for-5 at the foul line. She was joined in double figures by
Katie Gardner (Franklin, Wis./Pius XI) who finished with 16 points.
Carly Graverson (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) added eight points.
Lewis shot 38.5 percent (25-of-65) from the field, was 3-for-18 from three and shot 83 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded the Greyhounds 40-to-34 and recorded 17 assists on 25 made field goals.
Laura Thomas and Benoit had 12 and 11 points respectively to lead UIndy. The Hounds shot 37 percent (19-for-51) from the floor, was 3-of-14 from three and shot 90 percent at the foul line.
The Flyers will take on seventh seeded Bellarmine in the semifinal round of the GLVC Tournament on Saturday at 12 p.m. at First Community Arena at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Ill.
