Flyers Pick Up Two Wins In Florida To Start Spring Break Trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Lewis' softball team started its Spring Break Trip in Florida with wins over Minnesota State-Moorhead 8-2 and Dominican (N.Y.) 6-3 on Saturday at the Diamond Plex in Winter Haven, Fla. The Flyers improve to 6-5 on the season.

Lewis 8 Minnesota State-Moorhead 2
Lewis scored four runs on two hits and took advantage of two errors in the top of the second inning. Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) drove in the first run with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher to bring home Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee). Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) drove in the second run with a single to left to score Amy Bukovsky (Aurora, Ill./Montini Catholic) and then Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) capped the scoring with a two-run single to center.

The Dragons (0-5) cut the lead in half scoring two runs without the benefit of a hit and two Flyer errors in the bottom of the second.

Lewis added some insurance runs in the sixth on Magaldi's grand slam to left field.

That would be all the run support Serena needed as she held the MSUM to two unearned runs on three hits while striking out four to pickup the complete game win to improve to 2-2 on the season.

The Flyers outhit the Dragons 9-3 in the contest and were led by Taylor, Serena and Magali with two hits apiece.

Lewis 6 Dominican 3
The Flyers scored all six of its runs in the first three innings against the Chargers (1-1). Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) drove in the first run with a two out single to center to bring home Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park).

Lewis added two more in the second on a hit and three errors. Taylor drove in the first run with a groundout to first and Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) drove in the second run with a single to center.

Katie David (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) led off the third inning with a double to center and scored on Swartzentruber's two-run homer to center. Magaldi doubled to right with two outs in the inning and scored on a fielding error by Samantha Fitzgerald.

Dominican scored three runs on two hits in the fourth to cut the Flyer lead in half. Madison Walk had the big hit in the inning driving in two runs with a double to right.

Lewis outhit the Chargers 10-6 in the contest and were led by Lofthouse with three hits while Swartzentruber and Taylor had two hits apiece.

David came on in relief of Anna Gustafson (Elkhart, Ind./Penn) with two outs in the fourth and pitched the final 3.1 innings allowing no runs on one hit with six strikeouts to pickup the win and improve to 4-2 on the season.

The Flyers return to the diamond on Sunday taking on Winona State at 1:30 p.m. (CDT) and Trevecca Nazarene at 3:45 p.m. (CDT) in Winter Haven, Fla.
