ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team was propelled by 15-4 run over the final seven minutes in its 73-64 win against Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 8-4 overall and in the GLVC while the Greyhounds drop to 4-6 overall and in the conference.
Lewis trailed 34-27 with 1:35 left in the second quarter but was able to cut the deficit to one by halftime as
Lily Courier (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) hit back-to-back three pointers in the final 68 seconds of the half.
The Flyers still trailed by three four minutes into the third quarter before going on an 11-5 run over the next three minutes to retake the lead after two
Jenna Badali (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley) free throws.
UIndy cut the deficit to one late in the quarter but Lewis scored five of the final six points of the stanza to take a 56-51 advantage into the final 10 minutes.
The Greyhounds opened the last frame scoring nine of the first 11 points to take its final lead of the game on a three-point shot from the top of the key from Taylor Drury with 7:13 to play.
The Flyers answered immediately as
Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) tied the game on a layup off an inbounds pass under the basket from Badali. After a stop on the other end,
Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) gave Lewis the lead back for good as she converted an old fashioned three-point play.
The Hounds cut the margin to 65-64 on a layup from Lauren With at the 5:42 mark but that would be the last points UIndy scored as the Flyer defense held them scoreless the rest of the way.
Badali extended the lead to three with a layup and then
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) hit two free throws with 1:35 to go to push the lead to five points. Badali made it a two-score lead hitting 1-of-2 free throws with 0:37 left and then Williams put the game away hitting a wide-open layup off a sideline out of bounds play with 0:23 to go.
Lewis finished the game with five players reaching double figures in scoring led by Williams with a season-high 16 points. Schmidt added 12 points, Hilber finished with 11 while Badali and Harrison had 10 points apiece. Badali also had team-highs in rebounds with eight and assists with five.
The Flyers finished the contest shooting 44.1 percent (26-for-59) from the field, were 7-of-21 from three and shot 65 percent (14-for-22) at the foul line. They forced the Greyhounds into 26 turnovers and turned that into 17 points. Lewis' bench outscored UIndy's bench 47-18 in the contest.
The Hounds shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor, were 6-for-20 from three and shot 82 percent (14-of-17) at the foul line. They outrebounded the Flyers 37-29. Drury led UIndy with 16 points to match Williams and was joined in double figures by With and Hill who finished with 12 points each. With had a game-high nine rebounds while Mickey Sasson had a game-high six assists.
Lewis is back in action on Thursday (Jan. 21) hosting Southern Indiana at 5:30 p.m.
