ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' men's basketball team had three players reach double figures in scoring in its 78-68 loss to the University of Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers drop to 6-6 overall and in the GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 3-8 overall and in the conference.
Lewis started slowly falling behind by five two minutes into the contest but eventually cut the deficit to two on a three-pointer from
Atakan Sahinkaya (Istanbul, Turkey/Perkiomen School).
The two sides traded baskets for the next few minutes until the Hounds seized control with a 10-4 run to build its largest lead of the half 24-13 on a three-pointer from Mikail Simmons.
Lewis cut the deficit to four on a jumper from
Trevian Bell (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) as part of a 12-4 run but that would be the closest the Flyers got the rest of the half as UIndy scored the final three of the final five points of the stanza to take a 32-27 lead into the locker room.
Lewis outscored the Greyhounds 13-7over the first 3:35 of the second frame to cut the lead to 39-38 on a fast break layup from
Connor Niego (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township).
The two sides went back-and-forth over the next three minutes as UIndy extended its lead to 48-45. The game continued to be a one possession game until about the eight minute mark when the Greyhounds pulled away thanks to an 11-2 run to extend its lead to 67-55 with six minutes to play.
The Flyers cut the deficit to seven less than a minute later but a three-pointer from Dee Montgomery from the top of the key pushed the margin back to double digits.
Lewis wouldn't get closer than nine points the rest of the way as the Hounds stretched its lead to as many as 13 with 1:10 to play.
Artese Stapleton (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) hit a three in the final seconds for the final margin.
Stapleton led the Flyers with 20 points while T. Bell finished with 13 points and
Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) added 12 points. Niego finished with a game-high 13 rebounds while D. Bell had four assists. Lewis shot 41 percent (20-for-49) from the field, was 10-of-25 from three and shot 72 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded UIndy 33-31 but turned the ball over 12 times resulting in 12 points for the Hounds.
UIndy finished the contest shooting 50 percent (23-for-46) from the floor, was 11-of-21 from three and shot 68 percent at the foul line. Jesse Bingham lead all scorers with 23 points and was joined in double figures by Montgomery with 17 points and Simmons finished with 10 points. Bingham had eight boards and Cory Miller Jr. had a game-high eight assists.
The Flyers return to the court on Tuesday (Jan. 26) traveling to Evansville, Ind., to take on Southern Indiana at 7:30 p.m.
