ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team announced a change to its upcoming schedule on Monday (Jan. 4). Due to the COVID restrictions in the Rockhurst women's basketball program the Flyers will now host Missouri-St. Louis on Tuesday (Jan. 5) afternoon at 3 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
The two teams were originally scheduled to play next Thursday (Jan. 14) at 5:30 p.m., but Tuesday's game will replace the one next Thursday.
The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) also announced on Monday (Jan. 4) that men's and women's basketball game attendance will continue to be limited to essential personnel only, following the league's Council of Presidents' (COP) meeting earlier today.
The GLVC COP will review the policy again in February.
Last Time Out – Lewis (3-3, 3-3 GLVC) was outscored 21-2 in the fourth quarter of its 67-54 loss against McKendree in its final game before the Christmas break. The Flyers were held to 1-of-14 (7.1 percent) shooting in the final quarter.
Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) led Lewis with 12 points, while
Lily Courier (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) added 11 points.
Lindsay Harrison (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) had eight rebounds while
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) had three steals.
About Missouri-St. Louis – The Tritons picked up their straight win with an 86-58 win at William Jewell on Sunday afternoon to improve to 4-2 overall and in the GLVC on the season. Alex LaPorta and Taylor Thompson led UMSL with 15 points apiece while Breanna Diestelkamp added 13 points off the bench. LaPorta also scored the 1,000th point of her career in the win over the Cardinals.
The Tritons have been stingy on the defensive end holding opponents to 67 points per contest while allowing them to shoot 43 percent from the field and 35 percent from beyond the arc. They've held to less than 70 points three times and two to under 60 points. They're outrebounding their opponents by 7.5 rebounds per game.
LaPorta leads the team in scoring with 18.0 points per game, is second in rebounding at 8.3 per contest and leads the team with 31 assists. Kiara Stewart is averaging 11.3 points per outing and leads the team with 8.7 rebounds per game.
Series History – Tuesday's contest marks the 37th meeting all-time between the Flyers and Tritons with Lewis holding a 26-10 advantage in the series. However, UMSL has won three of the last four meetings including both meetings last season. The Tritons defeated the Flyers 71-60 in Romeoville on Jan. 25 and 71-58 in St. Louis on Feb. 27.
Up Next – Lewis begins a three-game roadtrip on Thursday as it travels to St. Louis, Mo., to take on Maryville at 5:15 p.m.
