LIBERTY, Mo. – Lewis University's women's soccer team scored three second half goals to rally for a 5-2 victory at William Jewell on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers improve to 7-3-2, 5-3-2 GLVC while the Cardinals drop to 0-12-2, 0-10-1 GLVC. The five goals scored by Lewis are a season-high.
William Jewell scored the first goal of the contest in the 11th minute on Alex Johnson's shot into the lower left corner from two yards out in the center of the box with assists from Clara Fronabarger and Katie Kamies.
The Flyers had four chances over the next 17:30 including
Melisa Hadzic's (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) shot that hit off the crossbar in the 28th minute.
Lewis scored the equalizer in the 30th minute. It was awarded a free kick after a Cardinal foul at the edge of the penalty area.
Elisa Aguilar (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) took the free kick and passed it to
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) who passed it back to her and she scored from 20 yards out.
The Flyers had a chance to take the lead about a minute later but Hadzic's shot sailed high.
William Jewell regained the lead in the 39th minute. It was awarded a free kick along the right sideline and on the free kick into the box a foul was called on Lewis resulting in a penalty kick for the Cardinals. Corinne Hughes converted the penalty.
The Flyers had a chance less than a minute later but Aguilar's bid for a second goal was saved by Emily Glassman.
Lewis outshot William Jewell 10-3 in the first half including 4-3 in shots on goal.
The Flyers scored the equalizer 6:40 into the second half on Havelka-Vanderplow's fourth goal of the season from the right wing from 20 yards out. They scored again 3:36 later when Aguilar played a ball ahead to
Cameron Sengstock (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) who dribbled down the center of the field and shot it in off the left post for her second goal of the season.
Lewis added an insurance goal in the 75th minute on
Raina Spencer's (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) shot from eight yards out from the center of the box that hit off the crossbar and went in. It was Spencer's second straight game with a goal and was assisted by
Marsela Rosales (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West). It would another one with 0:32 to play as
Faith Lewis (Corunna, Ind./DeKalb) scored from 35 yards out for her third goal of the season.
The Flyers outshot the Cardinals 22-7 in the contest including 11-4 in shots on goal and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Aguilar had five shots in the contest while Havelka-Vanderplow, Spencer,
Kenedi Jones (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) and
Maddie Levins (Elmhurst, Ill./York) had two shots apiece.
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) made two saves in the contest.
Lewis returns home for its final homestand of the season on Friday (Oct. 22) hosting Drury at 5:30 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
