ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's 21st ranked women's volleyball team dropped the opening set but rallied to win the next three in its 3-1 win over Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 16-6, 10-1 GLVC while the Greyhounds fall to 11-12, 7-4 GLVC.
The opening set was tightly contested with 13 ties and four lead changes. UIndy lead by as three points in the stanza but Lewis came back to take a 20-18 lead after an ace from
Jamie Poppen (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West). The Hounds scored three of the next four points to even things at 21 after a service error by
Ally Hickey (Granger, Ind./Penn). The two sides then went back-and-forth exchanging points. UIndy got to set point first after an error by
Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West).
The Flyers came right back and tied the set at 24 on a kill from Stefanski but the Hounds retook the lead at 25-24 on a kill from Hannah Huppenbauer. Lewis scored back-to-back points to take a 26-25 lead and had a chance to serve out the set but UIndy scored the final three points to take the opener 28-26.
The Flyers led wire-to-wire in the middle set hitting .268 in the frame. They raced out to an early seven-point lead before the Greyhounds closed to within 11-10 when Huppenbauer and Lauren Cullison blocked
Bella Ray (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic). Lewis responded scoring 10 of the next 17 points to push its lead to 21-17 on a kill from
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg). UIndy made one final run cutting the margin to 23-21 after a kill from Grace Hegwood but wouldn't get any closer as
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) knocked home a kill and then Emma Jones was called for being in the net on her attack attempt giving Lewis the 25-21 victory.
The swing set was tied at five when the Flyers seized control thanks to a 7-0 run and wouldn't look back on the way to a 25-15 victory. Lewis hit .395 in the stanza recording 18 kills against three errors in 32 chances. Ray and
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) combined for 11 of the team's 18 kills in the set.
The Flyers led for a majority of set four but the Hounds stayed within striking distance until Lewis pulled away with a late run to grab a seven-point advantage and would go onto win the set 25-18 on a kill from Van Loo.
The Flyers finished with four players reaching double figures in kills and were led by Venema and Van Loo with 18 kills apiece. Ray and Schlechte added 12 kills each.
Lauren Stenman (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) had a career-high 62 set assists and Poppen finished with a match-high 31 digs. Lewis finished the contest with a .291 attack percentage.
Hegwood tied Venema and Van Loo for the match-high in kills with 18 for the Greyhounds and she was joined in double figures by Cullison with 10 kills. Alex Equiha had 39 assists and 16 digs in the contest. Huppenbauer finished with seven total blocks in the match. UIndy hit .227 for the contest.
The Flyers continue their final homestand of the season next Friday (Oct. 29) against Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m. Lewis will honor its five seniors after the conclusion of the match.
