ROLLA, Mo. – Lewis University's 13th ranked women's volleyball team bounced back from its first loss in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play with a sweep at Missouri S&T on Saturday afternoon at Billy Key Court in Rolla, Mo. The Flyers improve to 14-4, 9-1 GLVC while the Miners drop to 12-5, 6-3 GLVC.
Lewis began the match on a 7-2 run and never looked back. S&T fought back to get within 12-11 but that was the closest it got in the opening stanza as the Flyers ran off six in a row to push its lead six points on a block by
Bella Ray (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet Catholic). Lewis closed the set on an 8-2 run to win the opener 25-14. The Flyers hit .345 in the stanza registering 14 kills against four errors in 29 chances and held the Miners to a .061 attack percentage.
The middle frame saw nine ties and three lead changes. S&T lead early but Lewis was able to come back and take a three-point lead at 10-7 on a kill from
Megan Schlechte (Strasburg, Ill./Stewardson-Strasburg). The Miners responded to take an 18-17 lead on a kill from Shelby Ply but that would be their last lead of the set as the Flyers ran off three straight points to take a 20-18 lead when Ray blocked Abigail Widiker. S&T made a final charge cutting the lead to 22-21 but Lewis closed the set out scoring three of the final four points to win 25-22.
The final stanza was all Flyers as they raced out to a 9-2 lead and didn't let the Miners get closer than six points the rest of the match. Lewis led by as many as 12 points in the frame on its way to a 25-13 victory. The Flyers hit .444 in the final stanza and were led by
Juliana Van Loo (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) with six kills while
Ava Venema (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian) added five kills and Ray had three total blocks.
Van Loo finished with a match-high 16 kills while Venema added 13 kills.
Lauren Stenman (Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul) dished out 36 assists and
Natalie Stefanski (Plainfield, Ill./Joliet West) finished with 15 digs. Lewis hit .347 for the contest recording 45 kills against 11 errors in 98 swings.
The Flyer defense held the Miners to a .108 attack percentage with 32 kills against 20 errors in 111 chances. Payton Gannaway led S&T with 12 kills while Hannah Merjil had 29 assists and Meiko Pearson finished with 12 digs.
Lewis returns to action next weekend as it takes part in the Midwest Region Crossover at the Hammond Sportsplex in Hammond, Ind. Pairings for next weekend will be announced on Sunday (Oct. 10).
