Lewis Men’s Soccer Season Ends With 2-1 Loss At Lake Erie

Flyers finish the season with a 12-5-3 record.

MENTOR, Ohio – Lewis University's men's soccer season came to end with a 2-1 loss at Lake Erie on Saturday evening in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Mentor High School. The Flyers finish the season with a record of 12-5-3 while the Storm improve to 16-3-1 and advance to the third round.

Lewis had the game's first scoring chance but Aris Oluwatuyi's (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) shot was saved by Tomas Wroblewsi. The Flyers had another chance in the 12th minute that was sent wide by Godwin Asore (Kumasi, Ghana/Putnam Science Academy) and then Asore had a second chance in the 19th minute that was turned away by Wroblewksi.

Lake Erie had its first scoring chance in the 31st minute on a shot by Conner Mautino that was saved by Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenburg). The Storm had another chance a minute later but Monteiro Da Costa missed his shot wide.

Lewis had two more chances in the 33rd and 39th minutes on shots from Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) and Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) which were saved by Wroblewski. The Flyers broke through 67 seconds before halftime as Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) scored his seventh goal of the season to send the teams into the intermission with Lewis leading 1-0.

The Storm scored the equalizer 10 minutes into the second half on Teddy Baker's ninth goal of the season.

Neither side had a scoring chance for roughly the next 20 minutes until LEC broke the deadlock with a goal from Tom Pearson with an assist from Tomas Fernandez for his fourth of the season.

Lewis dominated position over the final 13 minutes as it was looking for the equalizer. It took five shots, put three of those on goal and had a pair of corner kicks but were unable to get the tying goal as the Storm held on for the 2-1 win.

The Flyers outshot Lake Erie 11-5 in the contest including 8-3 in shots on goal. Beaulieu, Oluwatuyi and Asore each had two shots in the contest with Beaulieu and Oluwatuyi each putting both of theirs on goal. Doppelhofer made one save in the contest.
