SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Lewis University's women's soccer team saw its 2021 season come to an end with a 2-0 loss to Drury, seeded second, in the quarterfinal round of the GLVC Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Harrison Stadium in Springfield, Mo.
Lewis, seeded seventh, fell behind in the 20th minute on a goal from Tara Simon with an assist to Elsa Gonzalez.
The Flyers best chance came 10 minutes later after a Panther turnover. Lewis had a two on one but
Cameron Sengstock's (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) shot was deflected by Kaitlyn Knetzke over the end line resulting in a corner kick instead of a goal.
The Flyers had two chances to tie the game less than 0:30 apart but both Olivia Zedicker's and
Cali Havelka-Vanderplow's (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) shots missed wide.
Lewis was unable to muster much offense for most of the second half as Drury held the ball primarily on the Flyers end.
Drury added an insurance goal in the 85th minute on Gonzalez's 10th goal of the season with an assist from Chloe Cash.
Lewis had a couple of chances in the final four minutes with Zediker missing a shot wide while
Elisa Aguilar (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) had her chance saved by Knetzke and
Abby Gustafson (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) missed a shot wide in the closing seconds.
The Panthers finished the contest outshooting the Flyers 12-7 including 4-2 in shots on goal. Zediker and Havelka-Vanderplow led Lewis with two shots apiece while
Lucy Clark (Bristol, England) made two saves in goal.
The Flyers end their season with a record of 9-6-2 while the Panthers improve to 13-4-1 and advance to next Friday's GLVC semifinal against Missouri S&T.
