Flyers Hold On To Beat Ferris State 90-85

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University men's basketball team posted its fourth straight win Monday (Dec. 20) with a 90-85 victory over Ferris State at Neil Carey arena. The Flyers move to 4-5 on the year, while the Bulldogs fall to 9-2.

After giving up the first basket of the game, the Flyers responded with nine straight points and never trailed again as Bruno Williams (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) scored the first six points for Lewis.

Ferris sliced the lead back to a point with the next six points, but Lewis came back with seven in a row to make it a 16-8 advantage with 12:48 remaining in the first half. Four points from the Bulldogs were answered by nine more from the Flyers as Beau Frericks (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) tallied six free throws during the run, sandwiched around a three-pointer by Anthony Sayles Jr. (Evanston, Ill./Notre Dame College Prep) to make it a 25-12 advantage.

The lead grew to 37-15 as the run totaled 21-3 in all before Ferris State stopped the run with a three-pointer with 6:10 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs rallied to within 11 points at 42-31 with 3:18 remaining in the half.

But the Flyers responded as Deon Ejim (Toronto, Canda/TRC Academy) stopped the run with a three-pointer and Connor Niego (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) scored six points with a four-point play to put them back ahead by 20 before going in the locker room ahead 53-35.

Lewis used an 8-1 spurt early in the second half to take a 69-43 lead after another Ejim three-pointer with 15:05 remaining in the game. However, the Bulldogs battled back with a 16-3 run over the next six minutes to trim the lead to 12 points at 71-59.

The Flyers were able to maintain a double digit lead until the 4:25 mark when a Ferris State layup made it an 80-71 contest. That was soon followed by a three-pointer and another layup for an 80-76 game with 3:08 remaining.

Sayles Jr. stopped the run with a layup and after a Bulldog layup Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) hit a three-pointer with under two minutes remaining to give the Flyers an 85-78 advantage. Bell finished off the game with five free throws to secure the victory.

Niego scored 20 points and added eight rebounds for the Flyers, while Bell scored 15 points, Ejim had 14 points and seven rebounds, Willams had 12 points and Sayles Jr. had 12 points. Lewis shot 30-of-54 (55.6 percent) from the floor and 9-for-17 (52.9 percent) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs were 29-of-62 (46.8 percent) from the field and 8-for-22 (36.4 percent) from the three-point line.

The Flyers' next game is scheduled to take place Wednesday, Dec. 29 at home against East/West University at 7 p.m.
