Flyers Snap Two Game Skid With 69-50 Win At McKendree

LEBANON, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team snapped its two-game skid with a 69-50 win at McKendree on Saturday afternoon at Harry Statham Court in Lebanon, Ill. The Flyers improve to 2-6, 1-1 GLVC while the Bearcats fall to 1-7, 0-3 GLVC).

Lewis struggled to gets its offense going in the first quarter as it was just 4-of-21 from the floor while McKendree shot 50 percent (6-for-12) form the field to take a 14-11 lead into the second quarter.

The Flyers got going in the second quarter hitting 12 of their 16 shots and were 1-of-3 from beyond the arc as they outscored the Bearcats 25-10 in the stanza to take a 12-point lead into the locker room at halftime. Lewis used a 12-4 run over the first half of the second quarter to take the lead for good on a jumper from Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central).

There wasn't a lot of offense in the third quarter as the Flyers were just 6-for-23 from the floor while McKendree hit only four of its 11 attempts from the field. Lewis was able to extend its lead to 16 by the end of the quarter by outscoring the Bearcats 13-9.

The Flyers extended their lead to as many as 26 with 3:18 left in the game on a jumper in the paint from Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) to make it 67-41. The Bearcats scored nine of the final 11 points to cut Lewis' lead to 19 for the final margin.

The Flyers finished the contest shooting 40 percent (30-for-75) from the field, was 6-of-23 from three and shot 60 percent at the foul line. Hilber led all scorers with 17 points while Lily Courier (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) added 11 points. Lewis had a 41-29 advantage on the glass and forced McKendree to turn it over 27 times.

Clare Breden was the lone Bearcat to reach double figures in scoring as she had 10 points. McKendree shot 51 percent (23-for-45) from the contest but was 1-of-5 from downtown and shot only 38 percent at the foul line.

The Flyers are back in action this coming Tuesday (Dec. 7) as they take on crosstown rival St. Francis at 7 p.m. at the Pat Sullivan Center in Joliet, Ill.
