ROSEMONT, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team dropped a 2-1 pitcher's duel to Hillsdale on Friday afternoon at The Dome At The Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Ill. The loss snapped the Flyers four-game winning streak and dropped them to 4-3 on the season while the Chargers improved to 2-3.
Hillsdale scored both of its runs in the second inning. Sam Catron led off the inning with a single to right and went to second on Elaine Towley's bunt single that eluded the diving
Katie David (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs). Emma Johnson ripped a double to left to score Catron and move Towley to third. Lewis got the first out of the inning retiring Towley in a rundown between third and home on a squeeze attempt from Natalie Stepanenko.
Jenna Cantalupo followed with a hard-hit single to center to load the bases. Hailey Holtman drew a walk to force in Johnson, but David was able to avoid further damage by striking out Renee Bielawa and Sarah Wojcik to end the inning.
The Flyers cut the Charger lead in half in the third as
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led off the inning with a walk and went to second on
Jessica Lofthouse's (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) sacrifice bunt.
Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) walked to put runners at first and second for
Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community). Swartzentruber drove home Taylor with a single to left. David grounded out to third to advance both runners, but
Evie Calderon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) couldn't get the two-out hit as she lined out to right to end the inning.
Lewis had another chance to tie the game in the fourth as
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on
Olivia Magaldi's (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) one-out single to right. Magaldi was thrown out trying to steal second for the second out and Taylor lined out to right to end the inning.
The Flyers were held to just one baserunner over the final three innings and that was Lofthouse's single to left leading off the fifth. Dana Weidinger retired the final nine batters to pick up the complete game victory and improve to 2-1 on the season.
Lewis was held to six hits in the contest with Lofthouse, Kavalauskas, Swartzentruber, Calderon, Serena and Magaldi each recording a hit. David was the tough luck loser allowing two runs on six hits while striking out nine to fall to 2-2 on the season.
The Flyers return to the diamond on Saturday taking on Northwood (Mich.) at 1:30 p.m. at The Dome at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Ill.
