ROSEMONT, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team picked up two more wins on Sunday defeating Findlay 7-5 and Ashland 3-2 at The Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill. The Flyers finished the four-day event winning five of six games.
Game 1 – Lewis 7 Findlay 5
The Oilers (2-4) struck first with a run in the top of the first on Devyn Zuro's ground out to second that scored Megan Fisher.
Lewis (7-3) sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the second scoring six times on four hits and two walks to take the lead.
Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) walked with the bases loaded to bring in
Meghan Bontrager (Milford, Ind./Northridge) with the tying run.
Elexis Swartzentruber (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) followed singling in
Olivia Magaldi (Mishawka, Ind./Penn) and
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead and then three pitches later
Katie David (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) hit a three-run homer to drive in Kavalauskas and Swartzentruber.
Findlay scored three runs in the fifth to cut Lewis' lead to 6-4 on Avery Shepherd's bases loaded double off of Flyer starter
Braylyn Burdick (Boonville, Ind./Boonville).
Anna Gustafson (Elkhart, Ind./Penn) came on to relieve Burdick retiring the next three hitters to avoid further damage.
The Oilers added another run in the sixth on Emma Bode's RBI single scoring Makayla Cowan to make it a 6-5 game.
Lewis tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the inning as Kavalauskas hit a two-out triple and scored on a wild pitch with David batting.
Gustafson allowed a lead-off single in the seventh but got Madelyn Turner to hit into a 463 double play and then got Alyssa Laisu to ground out to short for the final out of the game.
The Flyers were outhit in the contest 14-8 and were led offensively by
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) with two hits while Lofthouse, Kavalauskas, Swartzentruber, David, Bontrager and
Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) each had a hit.
Burdick went the first four innings and pitched to four batters in the fifth allowing four runs on eight hits to pick up her first win of the season. Gustafson went the final three innings allowing a run on six with a walk and two strikeouts to earn her first save of the season.
Game 2 – Lewis 3 Ashland 2
Lewis fell behind in game two in the second inning as the Eagles (2-2) scored two runs on two hits and a walk. Emma Lawson drove in the first run with a single and Lauren McMillin followed with a double to drive in Lawson.
The Flyers got a run back in the third as
Gabi Nilles (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) led off the inning with a single, went to a second on a groundout and scored on Lofthouse's single. Kavalauskas doubled to put two runners in scoring a position but David grounded out to end the threat.
Lewis would take the lead in the fifth as Lofthouse opened the inning with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. Kavalauskas walked and then David grounded into a fielder's choice at second retiring Kavalauskas for the first out of the frame. Serena singled to drive in Lofthouse with the tying run then
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) followed with a single to score David from second with the go-ahead run.
Ashland threatened in the sixth getting back-to-back walks with one out in the inning, but David came onto relieve Serena and struck out the final two hitters to end the game and pick up her second save of the weekend.
The Flyers outhit the Eagles 9-5 in the contest with Lofthouse and Nilles recording two hits apiece. Serena went the first 5.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits with seven walks and five strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Lewis returns to the diamond on Saturday (March 6) as it travels to Pittsburg, Kan., to take on Northwest Missouri State at 10 a.m. and Pittsburg State at 12:30 p.m., in the two-day Pittsburg State Classic.
