ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- Lewis University women's basketball team finished with four players in double figures in its 90-77 win over Maryville on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improved to 13-8 overall and in the GLVC while the Saints fall to 11-10 overall and in the conference.
With the win Lewis clinches the fourth seed in the GLVC Tournament and will host Missouri-St. Louis at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (March 3) at Neil Carey Arena.
Maryville got on the board first with back-to-back shots by Karlee Feldman and Jayda Jensen, but the Flyers answered right back with five quick points. The two teams went back and forth during the first stanza, matching each other shot per shot but Lewis gained the upper hand finishing the quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 22-16 lead into the second stanza.
Following the strong end of the first, the Flyers stayed hot to open the second outscoring the Saints 15-5 to extend their lead 16 at the halfway mark after a layup by
Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central). Maryville, however, found their offensive rhythm and pulled to within ten to close the half.
Lewis opened the half with quick shots by
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and
Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) but the Saints readily answered back and traded baskets to keep the Flyers lead at bay. Maryville matched the Flyers shot for shot but Lewis was able to maintain its double-digit lead, 69-56 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Jensen and the Saints opened the final quarter on a 9-2 run to get within striking distance of the Flyers. However, Lewis' outscored Maryville 14-10 over the final six minutes to secure the victory.
Schmidt and
Lily Courier (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) led the Flyers with 19 points apiece, followed by Hilber with 15, and
Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) with 12. The Flyers shot 36-for-67 (53.7 percent) from the field, were 7-of-22 from beyond the arc and shot 69 percent (11-for-16) at the foul line. They outrebounded the Saints 38-36 and had 18 assists.
Jensen finished with a game-high 23 points to lead Maryville. She was joined in double figures by Feldman with 14 points. Maryville was 26-of-65 (40.0 percent) from the field, shot 31.6 percent from the 3-point line and shot 67.9 percent (19-for-28) at the charity stripe.
Lewis' GLVC Tournament opener against Missouri-St. Louis is a rematch from the Jan. 5 contest which the Flyers won 87-85 on a buzzer beater from
Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West).
