QUINCY, Ill. – Lewis University's men's basketball team snapped its five-game losing streak with a 94-75 win over Quincy at Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill., on Thursday (Feb. 4) evening. The Flyers improve to 7-7 overall and in the GLVC while the Hawks drop to 4-11 overall and in the conference.
Lewis scored a season-high 94 points in the contest and had six players reach double figures in scoring led by sophomore guard
Artese Stapleton (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) with 15 points. Junior guard
Marquise Jackson (Macon, Ga./Windsor Academy) added 14 points while freshman guard
Beau Frericks (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) and junior guard
Bruno Williams (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) finished with 11 points apiece and senior guard
Dre Bell (Detroit, Mich./River Rouge) and junior forward
Atakan Sahinkaya (Istanbul, Turkey/Perkiomen School) had 10 points each.
The Flyers led by as many as seven in the first half but were unable to shake free of Quincy thanks to its superb shooting from beyond the arc. The Hawks hit six of 10 shots from downtown in the half as Tanner Stuckman and Jamaurie Coakley combined for 33 of the team's 42 points in the half.
Stapleton had 11 points to lead Lewis in scoring at the half while Williams and Jackson added seven and six points off the bench respectively. Frericks, junior forward
Connor Niego (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) and Sahinkaya each had five points in the stanza.
The first nine minutes of the second half were similar to the first with the Flyers extending their lead but Quincy kept clawing back to within two or three points.
Lewis gained separation thanks to a 12-4 run over the span of 2:30 that saw its lead expand from 61-57 to 73-61. Bell had eight points in that run including back-to-back three's in a span of 0:31. Sahinkaya capped the run with a dunk off a feed from sophomore forward
Vlado Zrnic (Greendale, Wis./Greendale).
The Hawks wouldn't get closer than 10 points the rest of the contest as the Flyers responded with another 14-2 run to build its largest lead of the night at 87-65 on a jumper from Niego with 2:48 remaining.
The two sides traded baskets over the final 2:30 minutes for the final margin.
The Flyers recorded season-highs in points, field goals made (40), field goals attempted (78), field goal percentage (51.3 percent), offensive rebounds (22) and total rebounds with 50. They outrebounded Quincy 50-26 in the contest and outscored them 25-5 in second chance points.
Lewis dominated in the paint with a 52-26 advantage and outscored the Hawks 16-4 in points off turnovers. The Flyer bench outscored Quincy's bench 53-8 for the game.
After shooting over 53 percent from the field in the first half the Hawks were held to just 10-of-27 shooting (37 percent) from the floor in the second half to finish the game shooting at a 45.6 percent clip (26-for-57). They were 11-of-24 from three and shot 75 percent at the foul line. Stuckman led all scorers with 26 points, but only eight in the second half, Coakley added 19 and Adam Moore finished with 14 points.
Lewis concludes its brief two-game road swing at seventh ranked Truman State on Saturday afternoon in Kirksville, Mo., beginning at 3 p.m.
