INDIANAPOLIS – Lewis University's men's lacrosse team's upset bid at No. 10 Indianapolis came up short in a 15-11 loss at Key Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers drop to 0-1 overall and in the GLVC while the Greyhounds are 1-0 overall and in the league.
The Hounds raced out to an early lead scoring four goals in the first 10 minutes of the contest. Lewis got on the board with 1:55 left in the opening quarter with
Drew Kask (Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada/Dr. Charles Best Secondary School) finding the back of the net for his first of the season.
Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added his first goal as a member of the Flyers with 0:23 seconds left in the stanza.
Lewis scored three goals in the span of 1:18 to open the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead.
Peter Carlson (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South), Xan Brouillot and
Jack Stone (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) each had a goal. UIndy came right back to tie the score at five on a goal from Matt Schoeneck.
Talon Heath (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Nolan Dalep (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada/Claremont Secondary School) scored back-to-back goals in the span of 1:45 to give the Flyers its largest lead of the afternoon at 7-5.
The Greyhounds countered with four straight goals to regain the lead before Daigle scored on the man up advantage with 0:09 left in the half to cut the Hound lead to 9-8 at halftime.
Lewis scored the only two goals in the third quarter with
Drew Andre (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada/Pitt Meadows Secondary School) scoring the tying goal 0:26 into the quarter and then
Hunter Loprino (Woodstock, Ill./St. Viator) scored on an assist from Stone with 2:04 remaining in the frame to put the Flyers in front heading into the final quarter.
UIndy opened the final 15 minutes scoring five goals with three of them coming in the span of two minutes to grab a 14-10 lead on a goal from Brian Robb. Stone answered with his second goal 0:40 after Robb's to cut the Greyhound lead to 14-11 and then Robb scored the final goal with 3:27 left.
Lewis was outshot in the contest 42-27 but was 15-for-29 in face-offs and successful on 80 percent of its clear attempts. The Flyers were also 2-of-5 in extra man opportunities.
Daigle and Stone had two goals apiece to lead Lewis while
Josh Calvin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame College Prepatory HS) made 14 saves in goal.
Robb and Andrew Simonich had four goals apiece to lead UIndy.
The Flyers are back in action next Saturday as it travels to Quincy, Ill., to take on the Hawks at 3 p.m.
