Lewis Women’s Hoops Rolls Past Rockhurst, 75-55

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Lewis University's women's basketball team picked up its 10th win of the season defeating Rockhurst 75-54 on Monday afternoon at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse in Kansas City, Mo. The Flyers improve to 10-6 overall and in the GLVC while the Hawks fall to 7-8 overall and in the conference.

Lewis raced out to 5-2 lead to start the game but Rockhurst battled back to a take its only lead of the contest at 6-5 on a jumper from Ella Wedergren. The Flyers dominated the rest of the quarter outscoring the Hawks 14-2 to take an 11-point lead into the second quarter.

Rockhurst cut the Lewis lead to 10 points early in the second quarter but the Flyers answered with eight straight points including back-to-back three's from Kaitlyn Williams (Homer Glen, Ill./Joliet Catholic) to extend their lead to 18 points early in the frame.

The Hawks cut the deficit to 29-15 but Lewis closed the half strong scoring nine of the final 12 points to take a 38-19 lead at the half.

The Flyers shot 41 percent (16-for-39) from the floor in the first 20 minutes, were 5-of-15 from three and 1-for-3 at the foul line. They outrebounded Rockhurst 26-19 and forced 10 turnovers resulting in 10 points off turnovers.

The Hawks were held to 25 percent shooting (7-of-28) from the field, was 0-for-7 from three and shot 63 percent at the foul line.

Lewis extended its lead to 28 points with 93 seconds left in the third quarter on a driving layup from Jenna Badali (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley). Rockhurst scored the final four points of the quarter to cut the Flyer lead to 58-34 by the end of the quarter.

Lewis led by as many as 25 points in the final quarter, but the Hawks used a 17-6 run to cut the Flyer advantage to 14 points with less than three minutes to play. That would be the closest they got as Lewis finished the contest on a 7-1 run for the final margin.

The Flyers finished the contest shooting 41 percent (29-for-70) from the field, were 6-of-22 from three and shot 69 percent (11-for-16) at the foul line. They outrebounded Rockhurst 48-39 and turned 22 Hawk turnovers into 20 points.

Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) led all scorers with 16 points in the contest while Williams added 13 and Lily Courier (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) finished with 10 points. Schmidt had eight rebounds and Badali had five assists.

Rockhurst was held to 33 percent (19-for-57) shooting from the floor, was 2-of-17 from three and shot 54 percent (15-for-28) at the foul line. Daly Sullivan was the lone Hawks player to reach double figures in scoring with 11 points.

Lewis is back at home this Thursday (Feb. 11) hosting William Jewell at 5:30 p.m.
